People keep pre-empting me sorting this out ... You may have noticed a move around of forums recently. There is a bit more to come. I'm aiming to get it all done before our 4th Birthday on the 16th ... and then there will be a restatement of what we're about and a return to values and stuff I'm also feeling less pressure to keep _everyone_ happy now with Retro Cars going back into print.

<--------See left for date of joining When I joined or probably just after (I lurked for a while) I remember looking at the number of forum users - approx 100 pages with 20 members per page = 2,000 members I looked today - 220 pages of 20 members per page = 4,400 users OK some of them might be dead ID's but that was probably the case before and probably the ratio is unchanged It's quite scary how big the user base of RR is I would like more of a return to the core values Which are of course but I'm damn sure that this conversation is held every year around this time - winter sucks - garages are cold - driveways are wet and we all have free time in front of a monitor instead of getting out there and doing stuff Mr B - you are a grumpy old man but that shouldn't matter

LMAO @ Dom's comments ;D ;D I see the forum has lost Spottedlaurel this week, this is a guy with a massive knowledge of J-cars and loads of photo and brochure scans which we have profited from in the past. He will join the likes of Ratdat, PhoenixC, Racer 86, James-the-mad-Prof, datsuncherry, DarrenW, Paul H and no doubt others who have loads of knowledge about their own field and have always made an ace contribution, and who rarely if ever post any more. Why do these guys hardly post any more? I'm afraid that more and more threads fall into what I class as 'inane'. The atmos is still friendly and inclusive and the forum still has a sense of humour. Perhaps its just the volume of people + posts means it moves so fast that my creaky old bones can't keep up with it. Somewhat surprised to see myself mentioned in such exalted company! In my case, sadly I don't have enough time to keep up with everything, and also the forum moves so quickly that I struggle to keep up with everything of interest. I really like this place and it's atmosphere but it is getting so busy now However having just noticed my current post count, I have an idea for a new pic thread ;D

The best bit of this forum is the readers rides.
I love looking around, seeing what other people are doing themselves, getting ideas, getting help etc. I have to admit that I'm not one for huge great threads full of pictures of cars created in big workshops with lots of staff with huge amounts of money and everything possible off the shelf. I love sitting back in an evening and reading threads by Slater, Nightmares etc out in there garages/workshops doing it all themselves, from welding to painting to interiors! That's why I post everything I do up in my readers rides threads.
Bring on the summer when everyone's out spannering or going to shows!

I think we all have a responsibility to keep the content of the boards good. I'm perhaps not doing my share... can't remember the last time I posted up a car that I'd found whilst trawling the internet. I started a Scallops picture thread but it disappeared after 2 pages. Meanwhile "Folk making stupid comments" turns into a 7-pager. It's a real shame SpottedLaurel has gone. We lost Ed a while back too.

Hmm. Not have been here that long I can't really comment on the good old days but would like to chuck a couple of ponderances into the melting pot as it were. Could some of the thread topics be because there is no 'off topic/anything goes/humour' section? Now, I don't suggest there should be one, or intend this as any criticism of this excellent forum, but perhaps the reason we see some of this is because probably the majority on here are members of other forums where they do. Personally speaking it's kind of hard not to occasionally, and unintentionally, post 'wow, that looks great' type of messages because I still feel like the proverbial kid in a sweetshop as perhaps others do too? I also think some very slight form of escapism (like 'cool stickers') isn't always such a bad thing in moderation. Excuse me now for sounding like I'm on a creeping mission but this forum really is the bee's knees. From the quailty and depth of 99% of the posts, through to some blindingly ace member's cars and on via funky descriptions and expressions, a wealth of knowledge, happy, funny people, a common love of old cars, an admin fella (Hotwire) who I can honestly say seems the most laid back, pleasant and affable person you could wish to correspond with and on to the fact that I can count on three fingers at most how many arguments or provocative posts I've seen. I expect we all think at some point we have made, or contributed to, an awesome thread only to see it die on it knees within a couple of posts, but the real beauty of RR is there will always be another fantastically good post just around the corner. The good weather is upon us and shows etc are coming up which will hopefully see more of the member's projects threads come out of the woodwork and give us some more oofage. Hats off to RR I say.

Its what happens on all good car forums over winter mate. Not many people can actually get out and work on their cars or have a play as they get home from work and its miserable and dark (part from the last few days!) and its always pissin down. Theres no shows etc.. so people just post things they're thinking about like what they might want to do in the summer to their cars ie.. researchin what stickers are out there or thinking about buying a new car for the summer, hence wnating advice? I don't know, I'm new to the forum but I have to say I like it a lot. Cheers

I presume that he's still active over on Auosh!te? Yeah he rather dramatically deleted his account. Which I never really understand. I hope he comes back, he always contributed positively to the forum. I guess Autoshiiite and OldJapaneseCar are his current homes.

I reckon stricter moderation would help, but let's all put the effort in and try to make our topics/posts interesting and worthwhile! I have some spots I've taken by camera over some months but I've failed to make a topic about it, because in all honesty there's not really enough to make a half-decent topic out of. I could just post them up, but I'm not going to because it'll get half a dozen lukewarm responses and disappear within the day. I'm saving them until I find something equivalent to Mr B finding a dusty Toyota 2000GT in an empty showroom.
My favourite topics tend to be where people have made a real effort to show us something, scans of old ads, photos they've taken themselves, etc. Technical queries have their place too, provided it isn't the same old queries over and over. There's a search function (admittedly not a brilliant one), try using it before asking, or even just bosh your query into Google. I tend to ask here last - not because it isn't a great place to ask questions, but because there's some seriously knowledgeable people here and I don't want to feel like I've wasted their time asking about how to fit a wiper blade or something (that's an example, I do actually know how to fit a wiper blade).
Not to rant, but I would really appreciate if people tried to avoid posting non-technical stuff up asking opinions in an approval-seeking way. Hard to explain without examples, but by that I mean topics in the vein of "what colour should I paint my wheels", "what mods should I do to this", "what car should I buy", etc. It's up to you! Don't do stuff just to fit in, use your imagination, do a bit of digging.

It's not done to 'fit in' i thought people did that for advice and for things to avoid, to learn lessons from other forum users etc.

But styles you should pick up based on what you personally think would suit your car. There aren't really many lessons to learn from a topic asking whether we'd prefer one sort of wheel on their car or another sort, or whether it would be better in red or blue, whether a chequered roof would suit it, etc. It should be a personal decision, your motor, your style. Go with what you like, don't ask for permission first!

Rather than start a thread like this why not find something to stir up some interest, something you've spotted, a website that caught your eye or add to a readers rides thread about your car ;D The forum is what you make it

I think we all have a responsibility. I myself found a picture of a Volvo this morning that I wanted to show, but was aware that it wasn't enough to make a good thread....I went and found some more before I posted it. All threads should be illustrated and asking for help should be more than just not being bothered yourself. This: I'm getting a Polo, what should I do to it? ...isn't enough. This: I'm getting a Polo and I'm looking for ideas - I like stuff like this: or this: I'd welcome input from fellow RRers, especially on wheel and tyre sizes. ....is much better. If you're making any thread, put the effort in. One video link, one picture or one URL isn't enough. Ask a question (what do you think?), make an observation (Those wheels are cool), explain what you like about it - invite people to find similar/better examples.
