We seem to have one of these threads every few months.
Maybe theres some truth in it.
I've nto been here that long but yeah, maybe theres less "good stuff" and the more wrrying thing is that when the "good stuff" gets posted its largely overlooked 'cos of other stuff (not good stuff) going on.
Ialso get the feeling sometimes I wonder whay I bother. Youget the same questions and you think "I've answered this before" and sometimes same person asking....
Perhaps we should have an FAQ of the common questions we can just direct people to.

It's a tough one to explain properly, technical advice is one thing and this forum is great for it. But styles you should pick up based on what you personally think would suit your car. There aren't really many lessons to learn from a topic asking whether we'd prefer one sort of wheel on their car or another sort, or whether it would be better in red or blue, whether a chequered roof would suit it, etc. It should be a personal decision, your motor, your style. Go with what you like, don't ask for permission first! I'm not sure I entirely agree with you there. I think that asking for suggestions can turn up some ideas that you hadn't thought of. But if you mean a kind of "building a car by committee" sort of thing, going with whatever gets the most votes... yeah that's kind of annoying. I don't see the problem with asking for suggestions though - there are a lot of people on here with a lot of vision who have built great cars.

As a newbie.. I find the most annoying thing about the forum is purely a technical issue. The search feature is really rubbish!
Okay, so the "general" section moves fast.. I can live with that. The trouble is, finding a thread which was alive a week ago can be almost impossible.
I know some people hate thread resurrection, but I don't think there is anything wrong with it, so long as it is dug up for a good reason. It beats having regular threads on the same subject, where the same stuff gets repeated.
Maybe the poor search function in itself contributes to repeat questions. If people cant find the info they need, they have to ask again.
That said.. I like this forum. Every day, I see something I have never seen before, or some cool car I can't even identify. It keeps the creative juices flowing.

quote from hirst Not to rant, but I would really appreciate if people tried to avoid posting non-technical stuff up asking opinions in an approval-seeking way. Hard to explain without examples, but by that I mean topics in the vein of "what colour should I paint my wheels", "what mods should I do to this", "what car should I buy", etc. It's up to you! Don't do stuff just to fit in, use your imagination, do a bit of digging isnt that what the internets for? ;D

Classic (recent) example on another forum where I mentioned what I fancied doing and offered some suggestions I was torn between. Within a few hours I had loads of positive thoughts and suggestions including some I'd not considered myself and I'll be using these ideas. I have had exactly the same thing on here, sometimes you plan something and someone will photoshop it and you realise it will look gash but before you know it someone else will suggest another way of doing things or another mod you may have overlooked. I certainly do agree with Rmad's post though: no imagination or thought does make you wonder why some people bother.

Perhaps we should have an FAQ of the common questions we can just direct people to. *cough* : retrorides.proboards86.com/index.cgi?board=usetharchThats what it'll be used for I'm also going to have a unified spotted thread because the number of spotted threads is pushing good stuff off the board now days, like ebay threads used to.

I have nothing against suggestions, especially if they're different - Hayashi Bombers on an Austin Montego Countryman? Yes please! As with Rmads post though, effort should still be made, show us what sort of things you like, some cool images, etc. Not just "I have X car, what is cool for X car?"
"Building a car by committee" definitely explains it a lot better than I was trying to! Hope I've not caused too much confusion.

HoTWire is right - I scanned the front page the other day and there were over 10 "Spot" threads! Readers Rides is my real focus point here. I don't know of ANY car forum that has such a diverse range of motors in it's "Projects" section. I can come on here and see anything from a twin engined Mk3 Escort to a V8 Pop to a slammed Eurostyle Polo and all sorts of random stuff like Viva 200SX's and rotary Chevettes! That's what keeps me coming back. Someone pointed out that things like this tend to be cyclical and I'd certainly go along with that. The crappy cold weather and dark nights don't inspire car tinkering even if you have a nice well lit workshop..... summer will bring joy, it always does. Keep the spirit alive

IBuilding a car by committee" definitely explains it a lot better than I was trying to! Inspiration is what this place is all about - some people ask for advice - I look at it that they are asking for inspiration - Only thing I don't want to see as a result is a clone someone elses car cos that would be like a sheep ;D I've asked opinions before and listened to the comments and weighed up what was said and done it anyway cos I knew it would work ;D

I have lots of oppinions.
The forum has too many members and is way to diverse
I want a forum about RETRO cars, this forum seems to be more about 'cars' in general and most of the stuff is boring me. I know we have allways taken the 'if you think its retro then it is' take on things, which is ok but it seems like most of the stuff is either hotrod/custom, VW , Ford etc. and proper 'hardcore' retro motoring dosnt pop up very often anymore!!
I don't expect you to take any notice of me but i am angry at the way this forum has gone as it used to be out of this world.
Way too much talking and not enough building cars too!

I take lots of inspiration from Hotrods and Custom cars. I also think they're retro. ...and you want no VW's and Fords?! ...maybe I got the wrong end of the stick there...

....VW , Ford etc. and proper 'hardcore' retro motoring.... So, what is 'hard-core' retro? By singling out customs/rods/fords and veedubs I can only assume that your definition of retro is something which ain't got a maintsream following? It's also worth noting that a comment like that will be 100% applicable (and damn offensive) to people on here who own cars of such ilk, such as myself. Are they not welcome? I guess Mercedes won't comply soon as more than one person on here owns one. Is it built anymore? No. Is it pre 1990 (ish)? Yes. Is it owned by someone who takes pride in it, no matter what it is? Yes. Is it Retro? Damn straight.

OK point #1 - I look like an ass now. but thats just the puppy. If I get time and if I can find them I'll go back and find a few threads I thought at the time "this should be kept" and notify a suitable forum-adult so they can be considered for preservation. point#2 - good point.

I don't expect you to take any notice of me but I am angry at the way this forum has gone as it used to be out of this world. Way too much talking and not enough building cars too! So essentially what you are saying is that all you are looking for is a forum where you have members who are able to devote time / money to a project all the time? Unfortunately, there are members like myself who, due to circumstances are project less at the moment, are you saying that we should not join in this COMMUNITY because we do not have a project at the moment? Am I to take it that you believe me to be less worth to the community because I like to discuss other retro motoring related things on the forum? Slater, you are an excellent engineer and you have an innovative way of problem solving, but unfortunately there is no way that I can be one of these people who can turn out cars like yourself, this isn't due to lack of skill (ummm maybe) or vision, just time and money. Sorry, appear to be rambling and repeating... To the point, the reason that I started frequenting this forum was the friendly atmosphere and the vast range of cars on offer! Comments like yours make myself, who does not have a project for readers rides at the moment feel as if there is being very little point being part of this community that is the RR forums... Please do not take this as a personal attack - it is just that your comment and others like it have just boiled my pee a little this evening. (Kids won't go to sleep so not in best mood).

The slection of stuff I'd narrow it down too might be different to the stuff you'd narrow it down to. Each start our own forums or just skip the stuff we don't like so much? Somewhere when I joined this forum it said "Modifed classic" and thats as tight a destinction as I'd want to see. I own a Ford and TBH I don't see much of the VW "scene" unless its what gets posted here so it doesn't bother me. Some of it makes me shrug, but hey. There is a bunchof stuff I'd not call classic and itsmore att than modified... but I'm not sure what you do about that... Way too much talking and not enough building cars too! 2 groups there - one's the "noobs" who just need some encouraging (what this place is for?) then theres the old gits who have too many committments to make proper prgress with stuff any more and at least have some "experiance" to share. which is what this place is for as well, right? Also what consitiutes "building" needs to be defined. shoving stickers and a roof rack on is not... ;D
