Just because it passes an MOT, doesn't make it road legal! As far as I know, the rules on wheel arches are included in the construction and use laws, not the MOT requirements.
According some a quick google, it is under "Road vehicles (construction and Use) Regulations 1986 part 11 subsection 20 to 28" The act itself isn't available online it seems.

Basically, the tread has to be covered by the footprint of the car however the sidewall and wheel can protrude. Bit of a loophole TBH.

Sorry for the bit of OT, but bigrod, your sig is gorgeous. Thanks, but I can't take credit for it. It was copied from one of the other ABS members who 'gifted' them to all on the forum. One day I'll have one that looks a bit like that!!! ;D

When viewed from above 3/4 of the tread of the tyre must be covered.
Thats the Construction and Use view. No mention of the wheel.

Out of interest.. Anyone know if there is any requirement for where that 3/4 needs to be? Does that have to be at least 3/4, centred at the top of the wheel, leaving 1/8th exposed at each end, or can you have the first 1/4 completely uncovered?

I think the true meaning of the law is that you can have an 1/8th uncovered at each side.

Iv always had the understanding that as long as the tread is inside the wheel arch then its road legal, hence the stretched tyres on euro styleee below. I rang up a garage and asked about wheels tread out being in the requirements (as my mini is fekin close) but he said it wasn't in the mot but the police might not like it.lol My mini:

How many times do we need this thread? As many times as we needed banded wheels threads before we got the actual facts, with the relevant authorities asked and suitable responses recieved.

It is "all there" but unfortunately not available online. According to www.opsi.gov.uk, they didn't go electronic until 1988, so anything from before then isn't guaranteed to be available. If you want a paper copy, you have to pay money I believe. Perhaps the best way is to email VOSA again?

Definately not a problem for MOT. My local guy went on the training course for the new MOT and the question at the end was what would an F1 car fail an MOT on, uncovered wheels was not one of the answers!

i've a copy of C&U '88 or '90 or so somewhere, i'll see about digging it up. anyway offhand i believe ALL of teh tread must be covered by an arch when in a straight ahead position. that's what poke was invented for

The bit I stated is the law. Quote that to the police without sounding cocky and they've got to let you off.
Those wheels look awesome.
