Well, I'm all excited after just taking delivery of these... I am currently in the heart of the bible belt, South Carolina, USA, which is nice. The main advantage of being here (other than spending some time with my wifes folks) is that I can buy hydraulic kit from the best company in the world! I've just taken delivery of some rather sexy electrical and chromed components. This is what it will be fitted into: Unlike that previous 'S' class coupe that you all know about, it is not a bolt in job with this car. A fair amount of fabrication and welding will be required. Technically, it will automatically be stronger than the coupe as firstly it's a four-door (that c-pillar will stop the back bending), but more importantly, this car has separate subframes front and rear meaning the stresses will be held within the subframes, rather than between the body and chassis. I have already cut some rather large holes in the inner arches and worked out how to mount the lovely new chrome plated rams. I did this before we left for the states, so I was sure I'd be ordering the correct components. The rams will come through into the engine bay just where the air-con/heater control system lies, so a certain amount of relocation will have to take place before even starting. There must be seven or eight hoses and numerous looms running to this unit. Joy. The engine bay (being a fairly modern car) has plastic covers all over it. It would be good to retain these and keep the bay looking tidy/stock. We are not back 'till next weekend, but I hope to able to get stuck in straight away, so will keep a running photo journal as per usual, but these boxes turned up this morning, I just had to show and tell!

This is going to be sweet. You hoping to make it hop?
That would be a spectacle to see.

I'd be bringing back some tyres myself - £40 each for 20's here as apposed to £140 each at home. Not fair! We are flying chicken-airways, so only get a nats-chuff sized baggage allowance. I think the coils are more than our allowance as it is...

Started! Well, been designing the boot layout today. The boot is much smaller than the 560SEC, so a little planning was required. But first - here is what was in those boxes... From the right: - Four lovely new 6" rams - 2 of them chromed as they will be seen through the boot floor
- 8 donuts - I bought extra this time as I seem to always bend them - 6mm plate as well!
- 6 spare solenoids - I will reuse the old ones but they do have a habit of popping just at the wrong moment
- A bag of connectors, valves and switch extensions
- And the best bit - 2 chrome plated (powder coated) 2-tonne hopping coils. Lovely...
I spent over a hour positioning the bits in the boot trying a) to get them to all fit in and b) making it all look acceptable. This is how it will all go in (obviously the cages each side are the battery trays - 3 in each): Just as a side line - once the carpets were out, this was all on display: Have you ever seen so much stuff bolted to the boot side wall?! Anyway, as the battery trays have to sit at an angle and I am curse word at geometry, I scribbled down a few measurments on a box... And let the computer work out all the rest. (Turned out to be 25 degrees) So here is my framework layout diagram: Tomorrow the plan is to draw this out to scale on a large piece of cardboard to use as a jig, then start cutting and welding metal - Hurrah! This won't be a 5-day install like before (I'm taking my time on this one), but I'll be keen the first few days, and keep this updated... Stay tuned.

Well that all seemed to go to plan... Cut all the pieces out, and using a large set square, welded them all together. Planning is definately the way forward! And another mock-up with stuff attached: Got a few ideas to modify the rack so that I can hide all the framework under a false floor - going for a fairly clean looking install this time. More tomorrow...

The weather was just fantastic yesterday, so I decided to leave the barn stuff, and start cutting the car up! Now the ram has to come up through here, so whatever this little lot is, it has to go! First cut to accommodate the front ram. Such fun cutting a big hole in a car that once cost £80k! Even with the heater/air-con controller out of the way, it's still gonna be a little tight - looks like it will just about fit though: Cardboard template for box-section ram locating thingy And a metal version: Although now I've made it, I think I'll make another one with the box continuing up toward the damper mount for neatness... Anyway, only a little progress, but it's fun typing it all down here...
