Picked this bratwurst uber barge up on Saturday from MiniDan. Not quite sure what to do with it to be honest! The engine was running very poorly which turned out to be a bad air leak from a blanked off pipe in the manifold which related to the weber carb conversion. Runs well now! Needs- Exhaust blow looking at, Non-working horn looking at, Defective alarm/immobiliser looking at/binning. Dans cleverly bypassed it with a switch under the bonnet which has to be turned on every time you want to start the car. Ideally the old immobiliser needs to be removed and thrown into a furnace. Ive looked at the wiring and whoever installed it needs to be strung up. I'm surprised it hasn't burnt out by now. Exposed wires everywhere. The body is very straight, only the odd shopping trolley dint. Theres a very minor area of grot on the O/S/R lower wing right on the wheel arch. Nothing to worry about and wont affect the MOT. Theres the odd scab of rust on the tailgate and rear arches, just surface though. The interior is excellent, looks like its done 50k not the indicated 149k! Overall its in excellent shape. Its hard to believe its 22 years old. Its not immaculate by any means but it is in good nick. The 1800cc engine is commonly found in the VW Golf. I was a bit uncertain as to weather it would be up to the job of hauling the Audi's aerodynamic bulk about but on a short test drive on an industrial estate where I work it seems to be OK. Ive been trying to do a bit of research on the net about engine mods can be made to improve power but have turned up a blank. First things first though. Get it MOTd! I may have to farm this work out though as I'm currently occupied with my Allegro. Watch this space!

I'm going to put my neck on the line here and say MOTd within a month? Thats very very quick for me! Id like to stick some nice alloys on it and drop it a little. Any ideas on what wheels would suit it are welcomed! Will Golf mk2 wheels fit? Plenty of smart aftermarket ones about. Oh and I don't have any cats, but I do have rabbits!

Engine mods> Chuck out the 1.8 and put a proper engine in, ie. 5 pot! 2.3 20v from a coupe would be excellent but even a standard 2.2/ 2.3 with K Jetronic injection would be fine.
Had a 1.8 one of these a few years ago and it was underpowered IMHO, it was already on engine no.2 when I bought it and it started smoking like a good 'un later. I think it had to work too hard. Also watch out for the PAS pump, cost me ÂŁ200 for a replacement and it wasn't easy to get hold of. It also runs the brake servo so when it let go the no steering or brakes experience was not fun!

Think it will have 4x108, not 4x100 (ie Golf etc) Now I just happen to have a few sets of 4x108 15" Audi wheels I should get rid of... 2 sets of the speedline fake split rims 1 set of the later 10 spokes Interested? BTW I usually work Stafford way Saturday evenings. Edit: Can't find a pic of the fake splitties, but these are the 10 spokes:

The fuel system would need changing from a carb set up to injection and the radiator is in a different place. Is it worth it? Better to just buy a 5 pot to start with.

Tootle around town with the standard engine mate, when you get on the motorway the aerodynamics that audi got down to 0.30 will help it merrily along ,just don't try towing That weber conversion already uprates the standard engine which was 89bhp to better mpg and a tad more power. run it on super unleaded and advance the timing a little.

Yes, better just to buy a 5 pot to start with! On which note it reminds me I must re-commission and "fire up the Quattro!" Range Rover will sadly have to go - probably worth more in bits than it is whole. Shame. As for wheels - 10 spokes do look good, got them on my mine. These are the speedlines which are also nice looking, tended to be fitted to the 20V models:

BTW 2.0 5 cyl was available in carb flavour on early Audi 80's and Coupes (up to about 1983-84) if you can find one! I have the cylinder head and full exhaust for one lying around but nothing else I'm afraid.

Ill see how the 4 cyl lump goes. The engine isnt even a crossflow design, it looks ancient! Vorshe sprung technik on the outside, Fred Dibnah under the bonnet.
Those speedlines look great!

Right then, things have been quiet on the Audi front as its been down Jon Cedrics being converted to gas. Alls thats needed now is road tax and shel be fully road worthy! The huge bay under boot floor is ideal for a large gas tank and Jon kindly fitted me a 68 litre whopper so the range should be pretty good. I cant wait to get it on the road and start saving money on fuel. Every time I have to fill up my Volvo with petrol it breaks my heart! (and bank) I was meant to collect the bratwurst barge on Sunday but as I was running past Jons yard in my lorry today (friday) and it seemed a waste not to pop in and collect it. The time saved on Sunday can be used in a more productive manner, such as drinking and watching TV. My lorry is an artic with a 40ft curtainsider trailer so we needed to sort out a loading ramp to load the Audi which Jon managed to arrange. When I got back to my works yard much head scratching managed to produce a Heath Robinson arrangement of wooden blocks to enable me to drive the Audi onto the flatbed of a recovery lorry though the rear of the trailer. Took a while but it was all managed without any damage to the Audi- phew! Loading the Audi... easy peasy. Unloading, not as easy as it looks due to the different bed levels of the trucks involved. Got there in the end though! Looks like Jon might have started his own haulage business? Next step is to give the poor Audi a good clean inside and out and tax it, then it will be pressed into daily service. I hope its as reliable as the Audi image would have us believe...

Audis aren't always the most exciting cars but in my experience, and that of friends and family, they're damn good workhorses and very reliable if looked after. If/when I replace my Passat estate, an A6 or 100/200 Avant will be on my wish list.
