Following on from THIS thread about slamming and banding my Rascal - I am having trouble finding somewhere to buy some tyres. The wheels are 12" steelies (5" wide I think?) and I want to get them banded by 1.5" or 2" but can't seem to find any low profile rubber to drape on them. 13's would be another route, but where the feck do I find 13" steelies with a 114mm PCD?? So if someone knows a place to find some low/wide 12" boots OR 13" 114PCD steelies then please let me know? Camskill don't list anything in a low profile (unless I'm looking in the wrong place) and I'm not too sure where else to look? Any input gratefully recieved..... MM

surely LOTS of small J rockets will give you 114.3 pcd steels? like try a diahatsu mira/cuore, kia pride, old honda civic...

I'd have thought your current wheels would more likely be 4.5J to be honest but stand to be corrected. Meanwhile did a quick internet searcha dn foun some 185/60/12 tyres on, erm, Camskill ;D www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m27b0s2584p0I'd have thought these would be ideal for 5.5J or possibly 6J wheels.

165/60/12s are available in yoko a539 form from all good mini spares places. lowest profile i have seen, and a nice stretch on the width you are after.

Thanks Dude,
I've just been doing a search and found quite a few motors that have 4x114pcd!
Daewoo Matiz! Honda Accord & Prelude Hyundai Lantra, Coupe & Accent Kia Carens, Clarus & Magnetis?? Mitsubishi Carisma, Evo 1, 2 & 3, Galant & Spacestar Nissan Almera, 200SX & Primera Rover 600 & 800 Suzuki Swift Volvo S40/V40
I am sure I'll be able to find some steelies in this little lot (maybe even some 14's which would be quite cool!)
Thanks again....

i say stick with the 12's.
i was gonna do and add 165/60s but my xr2 brakes would not allow that

Thanks for the response guys....
I saw the 165/60/12's but thought I'd need someting lower profile......hence my question! I thought I was missing/not getting something obvious!
You'll have to forgive me - I'm new to this stretched rubber stuff and more used to the extremes of 35 profile rubber on my Zed or MASSIVE balloon rubber on my 4x4's!

I say stick with the 12's. Well that certainly was my plan - and if possible I'd rather stick to it..... Just for reference, my 4x4 is running the equivalent of 315 rubber in an 80 profile!! That's why I thought 165 might be a bit too narrow - but then again I guess is wouldn't be stretched if it was any wider! Like I said - it's a whole new learning experience for me....

35 profile on what size wheel though. it is shame there isn't any smaller than that though. if you are going to 13's then i would suggest 175/50s or 195/45's. give the same rolling radius as 12's on a 165/60. again not much lower than those profiles but they are pretty low

Triumph 2000s came with 13" steels in 4x4.5" pattern

Thanks Kee... The 35 profile is on 18" rims and look something like this: So you can see what I mean by 'learning curve' when it comes to what you guys consider low profile..... I've had a look at the profile differences and think I'll either go for 165/60 on the 12" rims or 175/50's on 13" rims if I decide to go that route?

I've had a quick play with the sizes compared to the original Rascal tyres (155R15) and I'm quite liking the results: Thanks again for all your input - I guess now I just need to decide if I stick to 12's or go for 13's??

have a look here. www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible_pg2.htmlscroll down a bit and you can enter any tyre size and compare with any other. will give you a good indication. the problem with smaller diameter wheels is that they usually have a larger profile tyre wall. bigger rims usually go with very small profile to allow the rolling radius to be the same as a stock wheel and tyre combo. if that makes sense ;D

Have a look at this one which I use ALL the time....( Tyre Size Claculator) It tells you all the data you want to know about rim sizes, sidewall height etc.... The tyre bible is a fantastic tool and great reference material....but for choosing tyres I always end up using the calculator in my link. the problem with smaller diameter wheels is that they usually have a larger profile tyre wall. bigger rims usually go with very small profile to allow the rolling radius to be the same as a stock wheel and tyre combo. if that makes sense ;D Thanks Dude, it makes perfect sense and I kinda knew most of what you are saying - it's just that I'm not used to dealing in tyres/profiles on this sort of size rimmage. A 60 profile tyre still doesn't seem that 'low profile' to me, but I guess it's all relative to the application and original size for comparison.

Just a quick question (again from someone inexperienced at these things!) How far have some of you got your rims protruding from the arches?? I'm all for a bit of cheeky rim exposure (of the metal kind ) but don't want to go too mad on my first retro-ride! I've made some quick measurements and a 1" band will be pretty much flush with the bodywork - so a 2" will stick out an inch.....is this about 'right' or too much? Many thanks, MM

Thanks for the input guys - 165/60's don't look as tall as I imagined on a 12" rim (that's a good thing . Mike, would you mind taking a shot across the face of the wheel/tyre just so that I can see how much rubber/alloy sticks out on this size combo? (i.e. to see how stretched/fitted they look) Kee - I'll be leaving the bodywork stock for now....just want to drop it and get some banded wheels on. Just got to work out how far out I can go with the wheels really. I'm limited to the gap behind the sliding door but is it really unwise to have the rims sticking out an inch from the body?? Lots of photos of motors on this site where the rimmage is a lot wider than the bodywork. Technically illegal I know, but any input from banded rims owners appreciated.... Thanks again, MM

Are these any good? Now that's perfect! Thanks Mike. Nice looks - not too much rim and not too much ballooning of the tyre either! Might be just the ticket on my Rascal. I actually quite like the idea of some of these rims too (black centres) but will probably go the banded steels route becuase that was my original plan and also because I doubt they'll do these in a 4 x 114? Thanks again, MM
