Does anybody here have any experience running an older car (i.e my allegro, no CAT and on a carb) on petrol contaminated with diesel?
The hauliers I work for share a yard with a recovery firm who get alot of work from car drivers who have accidentally filled their diesel powered car with petrol. Most have run the car very low on diesel then put a full tank of petrol in, maybe 60-70 litres worth, more often than not its a great big chelsea tractor! When their car grinds to a halt it has to be recovered back to the garage and the tank has to be pumped out and filled with diesel. A costly mistake! Anyway, the recovery firm ends up with gallons of gallons of contaminated petrol they have to dispose of. The gaffer says I can have as much as I want, when I want it. Basically its a free supply of fuel, as long as it doesn't kill my engine.
I wouldn't risk it with an injected engine, or a car equipped with a CAT but can anybody think of any problems that would arise from using the "contam" in a bog standard carburettor car?
Also what would the legal implications be? I'm not buying the fuel, I'm being given it for free. The fuel tax was paid when diesel car was filled with petrol!

Sort term I think it would be ok,
Longterm you could have issue's with smoke and high carbon soot build up.
Probably use a curse word load of plugs ect too.
If I know recovery firms there will be a good reason why its free.

I'd steer well clear. You'll never be certian of how contaminated it is, and you have to bear in mind that if the forgetful driver of the Chelsea tractor filled up as soon as the reserve light dinged on, that could still mean 10-15 litres of diesel is in the mix. New cars have big old reserves. I know that in these time of being bum-raped for fuel it may look appealing, but personally I'd say a prayer for the lost fuel and then proceed directly to the petrol station. Chris

Why not take it and use it with 3 parts good petrol. IE fill a 1/4 tank with it and top up with good. That's got to water it down enough......maybe?

^^^^ Exactly! 'OMG don't do it' is a bit extreme, I would defo do it, specially in an old carb-fed clunker, it will be fine. Even if it was 50% diesel, if you put in a quarter or third of a tank at a time and fill the rest up with proper pez, you'll do no harm at all, in fact your engine will probably benefit from it as an upper cylinder lubricant like redex. Might be a little smoky like but thats no big deal is it.

Thanks for all the advice!
Humm, I was kinda hoping everyone would say "wow, great idea, there will be no probs at all" but now I'm not sure what to do. The Aggs currently got a full tank of the stuff! Ive done 5 or so miles so far with no problems at all, no smoke, no pinking but time will tell. Ive been able to select the least contaminated fuel from a selection of plastic barrels, I used the barrels that contained the most petrol like substance, i.e lightest in colour and smelt the most like petrol. Some of the barrels had pretty much 100% diesel in!
I think ill use a mixture in future and see how it goes. The recovery guy runs his megane scenic on it and apart from a little smoke it runs without any problems, hes been using it for years. He recons its fine in single point injection systems but not multi point.

My mate filled all his petrol quads, motorbikes, tractors and cars with diesel a little while ago after a pump mix up. Drained half the tank out, topped them up with petrol and they all ran! Smokey as fook though

I have used petrol/diesel mix (from a repair garage) it a number of times, but not 'regularly', in carb fed and Kjet cars and neither of those died horrible smokey deaths. Although I only tend to keep cars 6-18 months... I'd go with being selective, diluting with pump stuff if really bad batch. And to prove I stand by what I say... I am in Stoke this weekend - any chance of a free fill up?

I would run it without hesitation. Especially in a carb fed car. I used to have an E30 320 for a while that I ran on contaminated petrol. The garage used to drain allsorts into it too, it was often mixed with diesel, brake fluid, engine oil etc etc. It always ran fine.
Also, if you are getting it free - petrol makes an excellent but environmentally unsound parts cleaner. Shove some into a platic basin or similar and use an old paintbrush to clean up dirty parts, or put it into one of those wash guns for a compressor to do your engine bay etc. don't smoke while doing this. Obviously. Wen done, tip it back into its jerry-can or whatever you keep it in via a mesh filter to clean the lumps out. When it gets too manky, either take it to the tip or leave it somewhere to evaporate.

I would run it without hesitation. . Yes, this is my favourite quote so far! Filmidget, theres barrels of the stuff left but its not a very nice colour. The garage owner is letting me have the stuff as a kind of favour but I'm sure we could sort something. The place is closed on Sunday though.

Use it to start bonfires!
Diesel is almost impossible to suppress once the timbers are alight. Fantastic for clearing land of stumps, trunks, rootballs, etc. A farmer would scoop up that deal, el pronto.

I´d definately go for it too Tim. I´d start off running a 50/50 mix and see how it runs or more importantly how it starts. The mixture is never going to be the same that you get so having a bit of decent fuel in the tank to start off with will help. I´d wait till the tank is 1/4 empty and add a 1/4 mix and if it starts playing up you still got some room to add some decent stuff if it plays up. Just be carefull it´s not the other mix...diesel filled into a petrol car..yours won´t like that at all!

Even if it was 50% diesel, if you put in a quarter or third of a tank at a time and fill the rest up with proper pez, maybe a few hand brake turns to make sure it's properly mixed
