After 10 years of driving air-cooled VW's I have just bought my first water pumper; I have never owned a car younger than me, a car with an engine in the front or a car that needed tax. I bought it to keep these good over the winter; Am I getting old or just become a big softie who sells their soul for heaters? Dave

I would hardly call buying a 14 year old golf as a winter hack selling out, hell there are people here who would call that retro I always have some random oldish motor on standby... criterea are cheap, comfy, good heater, not broken. Autofive has my current spare, an audi 100 TD, as his cortina remains poorly, and now has the distinction of being the only person to get a diesel Audi into blackpool ford day. Getting old and being a big softy, I cant comment there. Suspect it happens to all of us tho ;D

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Of course not - I only put up with extraordinary discomfort in winter in my Bug because I HAVE TO. If I could afford to store and run a winter hack, I bloody would, as would quite a few others who use their classics all year! ;D

if anything it makes you MORE retro-friendly.

Does this make me a sell out? Yup, pretty much. Might as well just delete your retro-rides account right now. Kidding... ;D I like that shape Jetta Vento. I reckon they have a lot of potential! Plus, my retro has furnace-like heaters! It's only A/C dubbers who see stuff like heaters and efficient engines as selling out. ;D ;D ;D

sell out? not at all. i had a '71 bay for 10 years, and used it as a daily for a number of them. being warm in the winter is a good thing. lmao.

not a sell out at all, i love vento's looks a nice one. get a mk3 golf front end bolted on, sell the vento bits and you'l probably make a few pennies to spend on the fasty.
i think ill be swapping from a retro to a modern soon, i just cant handle another winter of mini driving I'm afraid, and I'm 24, perhaps ive got old premerturely (sp?)

The question is not 'are you a sell out' but 'do you care'
if it bothers you that you are giving up something you love for no good reason other than say external pressure then yes, you are a sell out, judged entirely by your own standards..
If you are just doing something practical to further fuel your hobby which you love and whilst you at it improve your own comfort/life, then no your not a sell out..
The distinction is in your intention not the result

The Internet, like all tools, if used improperly, can make a complete bo**cks of even the simplest jobs...

Thanks guys, I think the sell out feeling comes from all the years of telling people I was quite happy in my hat, scarf, gloves, Jacket, Jumper, jumper, another jumper witha jumper underneath but knowing deep down a heater would be nice. I just know I'm gonna get such a ribbing from all my pals with air-cooleds but at least I will have the last laugh when I switch the heater on. I'm also trying to not think about modifying it as its supposed to be a run around but I cant help thinking alloys, lower and some paint.
