I have just dragged my jaw off the floor - awesome build! I know several people who have restored busses in the past (seeing as I live in the town that gave the world Eastern Coach Works I have a soft spot for most Bristol/ECW kit...) and this is just as hard work but in a slightly different way.

Seeing all that frame work brings back memories.... Looks to be all hardwood. Do you build em back up with timber or steel ferous??? the main framework of the coach is mahoganey with steel plates bolted through it so its very strong. however the lower half was fairly rotton, so we had to remove the alloy panels below the windows (which wasnt a problem as we wanted to put more access hatches into the side), we then remade the timber, tieing it into the old stuff with brackets etc, then reclad the sides and made the hatches. the main chassis is steel, but really strong and no trouble. there is little or no steel panels in the plaxton part, they really are coach built. the front and rear and some of the roof is GRP (very poor quality in places) but the rest of the outside is alloy. all the inside wood work is english oak that we salvaged stripped down and reused

bit more done to the bedford - i normally forget to take pictures of jobs in progress, but have made an effort! when i got the bus the ramp was fixed, so that cars drove (or where winched) in and remained at a 45 degree angle. this looked odd, and also had the problem that the space at the very rear was wasted and that the angle of the car would start fuel syphoning out of the fuel tank of my race car. the long term plan was to fix this by making a hinged ramp, so that all the above problems where fixed. we also decided that if it could be made to be easily removable then it would be handy as it a) gave a few more sleeping spaces in the rear, and b) allowed us to not take it if we where only going camping and not racing. this is from when its was just bought, with the car in place - you can see how much has altered, all the insides are redone, the corners and top hatch have all been remade - the lower hatch is the next large project, its made of sea iron and weighs a ton - its nearly too heavy for one person to lift. hope you all enjoy! a couple of weeks ago we got the ramp hacked out, it actually is tied into the chassis and provides a lot of support to the rear of the bus. the main chassis actually stops just aft of the wheels and the remaining 8 foot or so just hangs on its self, this is why really rotten and abused old coaches tend to look a bit 'down on heel' as the back slowly sags away. old ramp recycled into a tilter - things like working the balance point out and various clerances had to be accounted for. still needs all the corner points and strengthening bars sorting, plus method to lock it all in place. finally a test run using my mini mayfair (another project.....) going.... going.... gone! my mate paul bravely drove it in whilst i flapped my arms and shouted 'get the wheels in line!, get the wheels in line!' - well, it had to be done! i had to take the photos as he backed it out - but it works!

Wow, great build mate! Does the ramp hinge by itself when the car drives in or is it manual labour?

Wow, great build mate! Does the ramp hinge by itself when the car drives in or is it manual labour? with no car the ramp is balanced to stay in the 'down' position, once the car is fully on (i.e the back wheels are onto the ramp) it will slowly tilt, once its in the 'up' position the car just moves forwards a bit more. once its finished it will have pins front and rear to lock it into the 'up' position there is also a winch to go on the front to pull the cars in, its a bit hairy trying to drive them in under power!
