Let's hear the stories of those times when you wish you'd just taken an extra few seconds to check before doing something.... .....and the consequences that followed your stupidity. Here's mine: I decided to have a tidy up in the garage to make some much needed space amongst all the clutter so that I can get started with work on the Rascal. After a mojo restoring blitz on some of the clutter, one of the last jobs to do was to move the Z1 across a bit because it was parked at a funny angle (not used to having to share the garage with another vehicle!!) and was a bit close to the Rascal. Open garage door, pull Z1 forward, straighten it up and start to reverse back in..... ......POP!!Dog yelps and runs out the garage like it's got a rocket up its jacksie!! WTF?? Get out of car (quickly) to find floor, Rascal, tools.....everything covered in blue gooey liquid!?!? When I say everything - I mean everything! It turns out I'd not seen a full 1litre bottle of chainsaw oil on the floor....drove straight over it and it's exploded! Now got a garage and all contents nicely decorated in blue oil 4hrs of white spirit, rags, detergent, rags, mops, rags, more rags and the garage/contents are now less slippery. Peeved off, hot, bothered but finally relieved to have cleared up my mess I return to the house to find blue oil all over the floor and rug! WTF? (again!) Turns out the dog must have been quite near the bottle when it went pop. Looks like he caught about 1/4 litre of the oil poor fella! Back out with the white spirit, mops, rags and more rags. Another hour spend de-oiling the downstairs. Dog didn't like being scrubbed in the bath for so long, but he's looking a bit less greasy now....although he still has a blue tinge on his white patches. He's putting on a brave face but I think it'll be a while before he ventures into the garage again. Beyond all the panic and frustration only to find the house trashed as well, I think its hilarious. I'm just glad my GF is away this weekend....I reckon normality will be restored by the time she geets home tomorrow night ;D ;D "If only I'd checked" before moving the car! Come on then, lets hear the stories.......

After re-fitting the zetec in the van for the 600th time, I went off down the road to check it was running ok. I heard a knocking sound. I'd not tightened up the front NS wheelnuts. So I turn round, and my wheel falls off. It buckled the wing. The bloke who's house it did it outside is a Citroen fan and he helped me jack it up and get it sorted. I've got a picture somewhere...

I left my race helmet in front of the van once, which was an expensive mistake when we drove over it on the way out! Sods law it fitted under the bumper, then got demolished by the sump ... grrr!

After changing the front struts, shocks, driveshafts, bottom arms, steering rack and everything else that makes up the suspension on the front of a 106, I drove it down to get the tracking done (At quite high speeds in places) and noticed it felt "a bit wandery"
Got to the garage, bloke jacked it up and waggled the wheel and mentioned something about wheel bearing being loose.
I took a look and realised that while I'd fitted nice new pinch bolts into the hubs, I'd not actually tightened them up! The nuts had both fallen off on the way down too!
I'm so lucky they didn't fall out at 70mph :S!

LOL, sort of a home-made Exxon Valdez disaster. ;D A few years ago I changed the oil and filter on my car. I hadn't checked that the filter case seal was seated properly, went for a drive leaving a trail of oil as I went. Fortunately I was spitting distance from Halfords when the oil pressure gauge started to flick up and down and I quickly pulled into their carpark for a look. Unfortunately I had to dump the remainder of the oil on the carpark as I took the filter casing off to reseat the seal.

If only i'd checked under the car when my old clio got stuck in gear on my way home from a mates house at 1am a couple of years ago. I finally managed to get it out of gear, and carried on home as it seemed to be driving fine. Pulled onto the drive and thought "hmm that smells like gearbox oil". Then I saw the puddle of it under the car, so I walked round the back, and there was a 3 mile long trail of it going back to where i'd got it out of gear lol.
Sweeping brushes, de-greaser and buckets of warm water at 1am certainly didn't impress the neighbours.

TBF though, it was making no noise so there was nothing for me to check.

Coming into Brighton on the mini run, after having a 'rev-off' in the narrow streets the folk in the car ahead were waving and panicing at the front of my car. I then noticed a river of oil flowing down the hill. Pull over, no oil whatsoever left. turns out I had forgotten to replace the jubilee clip securing the pipe to the oil cooler oops we didn't hang around to see how the 1000 or so minis behind faired on the new road surface

As nuts that hold steering knuckles on old Mazda 323's are locked by splitpins I figured that means that you don't have to tighten them anymore then very lightly... I actually thought the pins have to be able to rotate in the hub carrier (probably I just didn't think much at all, as that's an utterly stupid thought of course)
Anyway, I got a mechanic friend to drive it to his work for an MOT... I think it was quite a scary ride for him ;-)

A few months ago, i went to a driftday with some mates.. first heat went well, but I decided to swap the front wheels to the rear and vice versa - because the fronts had less grip. A mate offered to do this with a electric hammer fastening tool (i dunno what that's called in english?). 10 minutes of work and it was done. Second heat. I was nicely drifting around, but still noticed some strange noise at the front wheels.. so stopped in the inner circuit, looked, still seeing nothing. Then drove up to the straight, but the car immediately got direct-slammed and i saw something smallish overtaking me.. Ta. It took me a few months to repair the shaved off strut, which of course was full of rusty bolts and nuts which didn't like to come off.. damn it. If I only rechecked those freaking wheel nuts!!
