I had a Escort estate (company car) that did that.... can't remember what they replaced in the end but you'd be sat at traffic lights and the thing would rev its nuts off.... even taking keys out the ignition did sh1t all lol
Had some comical moments in that car, never did blow up though haha

The fiorino sometimes does this, and you have to switch the engine off (which is interesting if you are halfway out of a junction ;D)

Now thats just frigging terrifying! I think turbo diesel lagunas had a similar problem where they sucked oil into the intake from the sump via the turbo and ran on it until the oil ran out and the engine seized..... don't think they demolished buildings though. I think that is what's called 'dieselling' ;D No, it s called running on oil, or feeding, or "oh feck! run!" lol. I've seen it a few times, TD engines are particularly good at it cos failed seals act like an oil injector into the intake. Stalling it in gear is about the only way of stopping it too. Dieselling is when an overheated petrol engine keeps going after the ignition is cut (compression/ignition). In case anyone was wondering about the landrover.... I was "adjusting" the injector pump when the governor (throttle) lever fell off the pump and the spindle end dissapeared inside The revs rose like mad.... stop lever jammed...first reaction was to stuff the nearest thing (hat) into the intake pipe to starve it of air (which worked, of course... ) So I pulled the fuel line off the pump, which is what I should have done first.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

most engines(/generators) i've seen doing that (running on oil) turned backwards after you switched them off and siezed pretty quick, because the oil pump turned backwards (and thus sucking oil out of the engine and putting it in the sump )

when I worked as a mechanic we had this bloke who was a total tit.. he ran a r5 turbo which was to be honest only fit for frag.. he turned up at the garage one day and demanded we rebuilt the gearbox for him. we duly did this at great expense and a few days later he was back complaining it was still huffing smoke out the back, apparently a mate had told him the smoke coming out the back was gearbox oil dripping on to the hot exhausts..
anyways it all came to a head when about a week later he came in and asked if we could help with it heating up too much.. my gaffer turned to him and asked him to turn the car off (which was ticking over beautifully at the time) and he stuck some keys in my gaffers hand. "here you turn it off I think the ignition is broken" so we pulled the bonnet to a heathaze of dramatic proportions, he had got it so hot it was running purely on the heat.. even grabbing a handful of HT leads did nothing which was weird to see !!!!.. (nothing we could do as it was obviously cooked) we stalled it and to call the AA for him he agreed and we headed for the office only to hear a loud bang suddenly as he dumped a bucket of cold water into the expansion tank and all over the engine...
