i don't know how good this stuff is really as they are only running a test on the engine, but it does begger belief that you could get home with no oil and water in your engine or even if you loose your sump!

That clip is about 10 years old and is part of an infermercial where they also drop the oil and water out of a car and drive it through rush hour traffic, it looked good if it works how they say it does.

I know this is off topic a bit but I have always been interested in these products and the link below has left me in no doubt. Particularly interested in the 'No Oil' demo bit.

Quoting the many no oil demos.............Since some of these demonstrations were conducted using Briggs and Stratton engines, the Briggs and Stratton Company itself decided to run a similar, but somewhat more scientific, experiment. Taking two brand-new, identical engines straight off their assembly line, they set them up for bench-testing. The only difference was that one had the special additive included with its oil and the other did not. Both were operated for 20 hours before being shut down and having the oil drained from them. Then both were started up again and allowed to run for another 20 straight hours. Neither engine seemed to have any problem performing this "minor miracle." After the second 20-hour run, both engines were completely torn down and inspected by the company's engineers. What they found was that both engines suffered from scored crankpin bearings, but the engine treated with the additive also suffered from heavy cylinder bore damage that was not evident on the untreated engine. This points out once again the inherent problem with particulate oil additives: They can cause oil starvation. This is particularly true in the area of piston rings, where there is a critical need for adequate oil flow. In practically all of the reports and studies on oil additives, and particularly those involving suspended solids like PTFE, this has been reported as a major area of engine damage.

Aye, was going to say - any test like that is pointless without a control subject (i.e. a standard engine). You'd probably find it not much different.

I've seen V8s & four pots run without coolant and oil for just as long, if not longer, at wide open throttle. Plenty of it on youtube too

This is a test done specifically on Prolong above.

Consumer Report took two factory rebuilt GM 4.3 litre V6 motors, had them installed into Chevy Caprices, broke them in with regular oil, changed the oil and filter, added Prolong to one engine, drove another hundred miles or so to let the stuff take effect, then drained the oil out. Both engines failed simultaneously after 5 miles and about 13 minutes. The Federal Trade Commission has been notified.

Slick 50 works, for a while at least, i had an oil pump go on me in a cortina, i drove it home about 8 miles (from Walthamstow to Enfield) with no oil pressure, the cam started knocking about 1/2 mile from home and the engine finaly seized as i pulled into my road so i coasted into my drive (which was nice) now i've had it happen before on a few occasions and there's no way a pinto would do that with no additive, lets face it they fubar the cams WITH oil
I was certaily happy with the £14.99 it cost me to get home (cost of the slick 50) as opposed to a recovery fee

Most old engines will run without oil and water anyway! Especially on a bench with no load

had an oil pressure problem with my old 2 door v8 mk3 cortina. it had no oil pressure on tickover but it picked up above, so i dropped the sump and sure enough the cause was a spun bearing i didn't have the funds to get the crank reground at the time so i put it back together and put some Lucas oil stabilizer in it and ran a full race season with further problems. after the season was over i pulled the engine and fund the crank had no new damage to it from how it was when we had pulled it earlier in the year. that was about 6 race meets and probably around 3.5k road use . the Lucas stuff works differently to these oil additives as its a pure petroleum based product not sure how it works but I've used it in all my engines since and its in the rear axle of the van instead of an ep 80/90 as its one of the only oils that can be used without a friction modifier in an LSD

I don't think you can draw particular conclusions about what YOUR car will or won't do based upon product tests on another vehicle as the effects of no water/oil will be different on other engines.

I know from banger racing that some engines are very intollerent of abuse - Ford colognes, espcially the 2.8/2.9 are a prime example - even a few race meets running at high temps will often blow one up WITH the oil & water in... if you run too short a diff, you can often overheat them and blow them up within a couple of miles of racing. Drop the oil and run one under race conditions and the big ends will be knocking in a couple of minutes. If I was running a cologne in a road car and lost oil/water or even saw the temp go near the red, I'd stop driving it immediately, no additive would convince me to do otherwise.

Other engines are way more tolerant - I used to mechanic for a driver who raced a lot of old stuff and I don't ever recall managing to completely kill a BMC B-series - they'll run red hot, they'll run with no water, they'll even run with a blown head gasket and all the water in the sump.

I have driven a 2.8 Sierra 5 miles with no/little coolant without any apparent ill effects on the engine (holed rad, didn't notice until I got home just assumed the temp gauge had stopped working again )

real world engines have to run for thousands of hours.




one Volvo I got had covered 120,000 miles, the last 40,000 milesof that with no service history, it was a turbo engine, when I got it, it had no coolant, a blown HG and about a pint of brown sludge in the pan (no oil)

On teardown the crank bearing shells showed scoring, but they were only half way to undersize, the block had severe ridges from piston slap but the rings were ok.

i've knocked the bottom out of many a cologne from over revving them they really don't like not having a limiter but never killed one from it over heating and I've had one so hot it stopped running and wouldn't turn over left it over night and used it for work the next day i think with a ford engine its more pot luck than anything depends on the mood of who ever built at fords ;D

Lol My 2.6 series landy used to use a bit of oil (about 500ml) for every 500 miles.. Anyway oil light came on one day.. which it did at times of its choosing with no reason... only this time it came on after i drove over what I thought was a box on the bypass.. Didn't think anything of it and carried on as normal. 12miles later it snapped a rod, never overheated though! Turns out box was more solid than cardboard and i was missing a chunk of sump and all oil. Lol.. sold it after that, wish I still had it despite its fuel and oil bills!

My oxford lost all oil pressure on the M6, started to knock its tits off but kept going. Had to reduce speed quite a bit but it got me from J12ish down to Brum no problem. Changed the oil and filter and it got me back home to Stoke, absolutley rattling itself to death. The filter was rammed full of ground up main/big end bearings. I motored it round locally for a few weeks before fitting a secondhand engine. The engine was cream crackered big time but it never stopped. B series lumps rock!

i ran a skoda favorit 1.3 for 3 months, 3 miles to work and 3 miles back each day, with no oil and no water.

and then proceeded to rake it round a field for another 6 months

i remember when i was a student many moons ago! had a mk1 uno 1100cc "carte blanche" was the model!

anyhow was skint for new oil so ran it for ages with no change did about 20k with the same oil! 1st the dizzy internals wouldnt turn so the exterior did! dad helped me fix that seizure and then found the crank breahter on the front was completely coked up!
at the time i drove 15 miles loosing oil all the time and heard the cam run in air a few times
