Oil cooler collected from Mr Hell at the side of the M3. It's the MKI GTI style which has a different filter housing with an inbuilt thermostat and two take offs for the air/oil cooler. Spent yesterday afternoon doing some research on whether to run with or without the stat and figuring out how to get it all to fit. Today I've cracked on and so far got the oil cooler itself physically mounted in the car by fabricating a bracket for the slam panel and hacking out the lower part of the slam panel. 2 problems/issues that have arisen are that 1) the new filter flange is a bit thicker that the old on so not sure the bolts will be long enough and 2) I've not been able to get a filter housing gasket so I'm going to make one out of weetabix packet, gulp. nick

Result. Old gasket came off in one piece and in good condition and was re-used. Been out for a run and the temp never got above 92 despite it being a warmer day and I gace it some proper welly.
Down side is Oil Pressure concerns. The gauge used to be hooked up to the filter housing but due to the new housing there was no space so switched it to the head instead. Once warmed up I was getting only 25psi at full chat and 0 (yes 0!!!!) at idle. I;ve only ever had the buzzer go off on a trackday and that was once so I'm a bit confuzzled. New oil pump next weekend me thinks and if that doesn't sure it then time to get it booked in at a garage for proper diagnosis. Not going to track it till I'm sure I know what's going on.

Oil Pressure gauge refitted to filter housing, it's tight but it just fits although I'm going to see if I can find a shorter T-piece as it is up against one of the coolant hoses. Anyhoo, to the pressure. It's reading what it was at that location before the oil cooler was fitted. So approx 15psi @ idle and then once on the power 10psi above the rpm, I.E 3Krmp = 40psi 4Krmp = 50psi then leveling off when nearing the limiter.
So I am less paranoid about the pressure now as those readings, while not being great, aren't horrific. The choice now is to try and hook up another gauge to check whether mine rust reads a bit low or just chuck another pump on there and see what changes.

So 18 months to two years ago the Golf in the hands of Alex the last owner had a loss of oil pressure and needed the bottom end rebuilding. The culprit: I've been suffering less than perfect pressure myself so today I pulled the pump out. Look familiar? Seems to be paint and sealant on both occasions! Oil pressure is now a healthy 20psi (1.37 bar)at idle @ 80deg Oil temp, hurrah! Not the hardest job in the world but not helped by a paper gasket having been used last time the sump was refitted. It was a right pig to clean it all up. I'll be cleaning up the old pump and adding it to my increasingly large box of spare parts. I spoke to Alex earlier and he confirmed it had had a new pump when the lump was rebuilt last time. Nick

Did a trackday yesterday @ Castle Combe and it was brilliant. I'll do more of a write up later. Got a few pics from the pros and Mrs Horney + some video. For now I'll leave you with an example of how not to take Old Paddock Bend: And a few pics: Nick

Ha ha yeah, an utter fail. It was the out lap, the tyres were cold and I was over confident. Lucky not to drift into the wall to be honest.

Been a while since I updated this. I’ve done another trackday which was frankly a disaster. The plastic baffle on the pil pick up pipe decided to take a vacation around my bottom end on the 2nd session of the day. The result being a sudden loss of oil pressure due to all the mashed up plastic clogging up the gauze on the pick up pipe. Let it coole down, quit for the day and nursed it home very carefully! Of course I didn’t realise the cause at the time, just had no oil pressure but none leaking out anywhere. I only found the cause when I pulled the sump the following weekend. Decided to fit a proper baffled sump and a MKIII GTD windage tray to stop this happening again. After that disappointment I thought my track action for the year was over until a friend recommended entering an Autosolo which I duly did last weekend and it was truly brilliant. I was rubbish and finished 14th out of 17 in class but had a blast. By the end of the day I was much improved and looking forward to doing a few more and getting better results. Course 4 run 2 with a bit of a mistake. Course 4 run3, my best of the day. One from the morning going the opposite way to the first two I posted. Last one: Some photos of the day: 120910 064-1 by James_Fabian, on Flickr 120910 063-1 by James_Fabian, on Flickr 120910 062-1 by James_Fabian, on Flickr 120910 052-1 by James_Fabian, on Flickr 120910 044-1 by James_Fabian, on Flickr 120910 043-1 by James_Fabian, on Flickr 120910 040-1 by James_Fabian, on Flickr Thanks to my mate James for these pics. So in the last 18 months since I updated this thread the sum total of nothing has happened on this car. Well that's not entirely true. I drove it to one VW meet and then the MOT ran out and I put it in a friend's council garage. I lost my job 12 months ago and although i found another one I took a considerable paycut that meant this project had to be shelved for the foreseeable future. 2012 and things have changed. Having sold my TDI Polo daily and bought the MX5 for a more enjoyable daily I have just been having fun with that but a new year and a new job with a decent wage and a car allowance mean that project BTCC rep is being revived and then some. I'm not selling the MX5 though as it's too much fun. This means I'll have 3 cars. Is that being greedy? lol. I'm currently arranging purchase of an OMP cage and in the next few weeks the Golf will be dragged out of the council garage and taken up to my friend's workshop where things will start to progress. As a reminder I want to go from: IMG_7049_edit by Nicholas R Horne, on Flickr to: One of the main stumbling blocks at the moment is the wheels. Seems the 15" Ronal R8's in 4x100 fitment are like poor quality wobbly children's play pony poop. Stay tuned! Nick

The first bit of progress on this in 18 months is that I have bought an OMP 6 point cage off a chap on Club GTI for a good price and it should be landing late this week. Excited!
Next up is to get the Golf get up to a friends workshop which will hopefully happen end of the month, then the grinder will come out and some real progress will ensue. Aiming to have the car done and working for a trackday on 24th May and the full livery completed for the VAG trackday in July @ Combe.
