I have been offered a new daily and I am finding it hard to resist and was wondering if anybody has had past experience or words of warning. The car in question is a 1997 Audi A6 estate 2.6 V6 auto. Its huge, has a tow bar, FSH, 6 disk CD, air-con, low millage and has been very well looked after. All for under a grand I realise its gonna drink fuel and make trees weep but I don't do that many miles day to day and its taxed and tested for at least 6 months. So what do you guys think? Is it gonna cost me a packet or waft me along in luxury? For reference, it looks like this allthough these pics are a bit rubbish as google isnt throwing up many results. Any better pics or inspiration would be gratefully recieved. I'm thinking big TT rims and a mild drop VIP style. Cheers, Dave. P.S. As you can probably tell I have allready set my mind on getting it ;D

My mate has the saloon version for his daily. It's a great car, and not as thirsty as you'd think

Cheers for the replies guys.
I have been running aircooled VW's for the past 11 years so the fuel economy cant be much worse than my camper van.....I hope.
Dave.

Oh yea, and top of the list of daily driver targets last week was a Jag XJ6 so I like to think that this would be me saving fuel ;D

I think the 2.6 v6 only has 148bhp but is quite torquey. It should be good with autobox and won't be to awful on fuel unless you drive it like you stole it.

;D Only 148bhp. I refer you to the VW air cooled post further up the thread.
148bhp is nearly 3 times as much as I have ever had in a car ;D

and three times less cool..!
but 148 is a well under-worked 2.6. I vote lots of tuning to make it potent.

and three times less cool..! I agree and allthough I never thought I would say this, after driving a vento for a bit I have come to enjoy my true retro's a lot more. By having something reliable and a bit bland for day to day, the times where I do drive my fasty or van are much much more enjoyable. I don't have to worry about them, fix them as often or use them for the commute. All I need to do with them is take them out for fun. Dave.

My mate has an A6. Lifeless, unbelievably dull to drive, yet reliable and solid as a rock, like an old St Bernard.

^What they said.
My Dad has a 1996 1.8L (non-turbo 20 valve) A6 estate. It is SLOW! It's very bland and boring to drive, but it's capable and very easy to drive long distances. It's comfortable, quiet, economical and reliable, has safe, predictable handling and is a nice place to be to get somewhere.
I don't know how many miles that one has, but these like a steering rack every now and then. My dad's had one at 100,000 miles (when we got the car). The exhaust might be coming up for replacement too, which could be expensive (My Dad's has just had one along with a clutch - the original clutch, at 165,000 miles, was still working but the release bearing was shot). Listen for the catalytic converter rattling.
Parts seem reasonable - my Dad got a full set of pads and discs from GSF for something like £100 - and it was all (Brembo I think?) OEM stuff too. If it suddenly starts using lots of oil then the oil pressure switch has failed - there are two, and on the 1.8 they are a pain to get to, but they are about £2.50 each.
Even the 1.8, after 165,000 miles, doesn't use oil or water so the v6 should be good for at least 200,000 if looked after.
If you're going to do your own servicing then you'll have the service indicator flashing at you for 30 seconds every time you start the car - annoying, but not the end of the world.

That looks tidy. The older Audi's age well don't they? It still looks like a reasonably new car.

I know what you mean and everything is solid, not even any surface rust. The seller was all worried as he hadnt told me about its 2 flaws. The Led behind the gear selector screen and outside temp screen don't work and are hard to read in the dark.......Thats it!
Did you get on OK with your purchase the other day?
Dave

That A6 doesn;t look a million miles away from the one that replaced it so it still looks quite fresh. What's the word on the mpg? I got on fine although it took 2 trains and a 5 mile taxi journey to get there then I had some trouble navigating my way back from Wishaw to the M77. I got back in 1 peace in the end. It would have just been pure lazyness getting you to pick it up giving it's taxed and mot'd. Here's what I bought. The plan is to fix the little dent in the side, change the rear suspension bushes and sell it to pay for a new bathroom

I know what you mean, Wishaw back to the motorway can be a real hassle as the Motherwell 1 way system will eat you if you go the wrong way and you end up going round it for ages. I havent gone a decent run in the Audi yet but I did floor the pedal yesterday and the trip computer was reading 9.4 mpg I'm hoping most of the time I can resist the urge and drive it sensibly which should get me about 30 mpg.
