.....so many people call the Reliant Robin a Robin Reliant? They don't talk about a Cortina Ford or a Cavalier Vauxhall, so why 'Robin Reliant'? Can anyone explain or maybe give examples of other cars referred to in this way? This is not a rant by the way, I'm genuinely intrigued.

.....so many people call the Reliant Robin a Robin Reliant? Perhaps it is because people are used to saying a person's first name then the surname - Robin is used as a first name so Robin Reliant feels right

I will get round to finishing it at some point

People who do and say stuff like that are possibly the same ones who speak about BROUGHT (like in fetching and delivering) when they are speaking about having made a purchase..... ie BOUGHT.
Same people who repair CILLS and other spellings when they repair a SILL for MOT testing.
THERE when they are speaking of ownership meaning THEIR , or even THERE when describing a person , meaning THEY'RE (They are ).....
Guess I need to shut up now, because I can't do Txt spk, or LOL etc.
Hope I have not made any major Linguistic Faux Pas..... ;D

Did Jasper Carrot make it popular?
Maybe not. "Reliant Robin" it is...

However, some people are better than others when it comes to spelling and grammar but you don't need to be an English Language whizz to get a car name right.

I had noticed the Reliant thing too. Don't know why. And the VW Beetle that was never really called a Beetle.
I know an old guy who calls pretty much every sports car a "Maserati sports". So he sees a Audi TT or a Porsche 911 and says "Hey! what's that? a Maserati Sports" He even thought my Mk1 Celica looked like one.
BTW Grizz, I'm a bit pedantic, like yourself. In fact quite a lot. (alot?)
And Grizz, I don't think you need those spaces before a comma;) Where? were. We're?

My current gripes are : - folk who call all 4x4's "Jeeps" (My mum always called my L200 "that big Jeep")
- My dad calling anything with a 3 pointed star a "Merseedees"
- People put too much emphasis on saying SHAAAAHHH at the end of the word Porsche
- People think "should of" is the shortened version of "should have"
Mind you, I'm sure I'm just as bad! Especially with words like spelt / spelled and practice / practise. I never get those the correct way My old Jeeps :

Also why does SWMBO always go in a huff when I tell her I can't Hoover as we don't have one (we have a Vax and a Dyson ). And why don't my pupils understand that the Internet and the World Wide Web are not the same thing? And people who think iPod is a generic term for all mp3 players! Again these are genuine queries - not just me whinging! ;D

There was some bint who blocked me in using a BMW X5 once, so I shouted her over to move her van out of the way.

LOL @ All, I am sure this is a typical whinge bin thread, but it makes me chuckle.
In fact the fact that Text speak is frowned upon on here should make this thread perfectly legitimate.

My biggest car name gripe, when people add an A to the end when they say Porsche.
Jeremy Clarkson is bad for this but then he always pronounces Volkswagen with a V in the middle.
Dave.

I'm sure you're expecting this but here goes: If JC makes the 'V' sound like an 'F' followed by the 'W' sounding like a 'V' i.e 'Folksvagen' then he's correct as far as the German pronunciation is concerned. Ooh! There's another one, why do people often mis-pronounce the word 'pronunciation'?

I've even heard people refer to a Bond Bug as a Reliant Robin, and an invalid carriage!
