A little update.. A previous owner/tyre fitter/smart managed to mix up the wheel nuts/studs with a slightly different size (the metric equivalent I suppose) and so one wheel has got to the point of two studs and nuts stripping their threads at the same time. I didn't feel happy with this. Turns out motorfactors just don't do studs and nuts for some reason. Two or three visits to motorfactors and a car modifying/alloy wheel specialist place (who had loads, but nothing in the size I needed) left me ending up calling my local Volvo dealer. 3 and a half hours after ordering, I got a call to tell me that they were ready for collection. I was most impressed. I parted with my £25 and a penny and cracked on with fitting them this morning. The old ones.. The predictive text on my phone would tell you that they are 'ducked'. Caliper off, disc off, bosh out the old ones, shimmy in the news ones and draw them through.. and then get the washers stuck on the end of the stud. 'flaps. A ring spanner was much better Done! The haynes manual says you need to use a special tool, otherwise you'd need to remove the driveshaft to do the job. It also says you need to remove the handbrake shoes. These are both lies I also put the new/old rear bumper on quickly to see how it looked. Old one off.. new one on park bench indeed ;D It needs to be moved in about 25mm closer to the body so it doesn't look odd without the chrome trim and stuff that would normally bridge the gap between bumper and body. A productive morning, but I was meant to be working on the Triumph.. Still, it was getting a bit dangerous to roll with ducked studs

Hooray Commando bumpers! Pull off the plastic trim, and paint the actual bumper black. They look mean as hell.

1979-80 240 models had the combination of the new rear end and old bumpers, so maybe you can use rubber strips from those? But on the other hand, it probably would look better moved closer to the body. BTW, a guy I know once bought a 240 from some junkies... They had tried to fit Mercedes wheels on it but that didn't work very well, so they simply grinded off the studs until the stud holes in the wheels went over them!

I love this car with the wheels etc just needs standard back lights put in their and painting nato green I'm still unsure about the lights. I reckon the ones on there look good, but would look better if I can get them a bit closer to flush with the bodywork. Chocolate brown is the colour I'm aiming for but I do absolutely love nato green... Is that their actual name? I think they look brilliant. Really slab sided and more purposeful looking than the later plastic ones. Cheers for the comments guys

That could be very useful, thanks, I'll definitely look into the rubber strips to make it look correct and grinding the studs that's really bad! To be honest I'm amazed at how bad mine had become and if I realised I definitely wouldn't have tolerated it for a few days

Yeah, that's very bad, but there probably a reason why they say that drugs doesn't make you smart...

Strip/Paint Commando's like that. That there - that's your new inspiration Ben. Now we need to figure how to make yours look like that? (Custom light surrounds with crystal reflector lamps, US style grill etc....) What splitter/spoiler is that?? You need one.

(Custom light surrounds with crystal reflector lamps, US style grill etc....) What splitter/spoiler is that?? You need one. You need to change the panel between the bonnet and windscreen (which is welded in) to a pre 1986 model, bonnet pre 1986, headlights, surrounds and grille from a pre 1978 240, wings and indicators from a pre 1981 model. And some of the panels up front behind the grille, from a pre 1981 model. But everything is just bolted (or in the worst case has one or two spot welds) except the panel between bonnet and windscren. And you need to change that because it looks curse word up with the newer style panel and older style bonnet, or vice versa. Spoiler, I don't know.

Good call, I'll have a look at them and do a trial fit later on perhaps. I haven't put the front on yet, so it may even fit correctly as it is (wishful thinking ;D) Matt, that looks 'kin 'ard ;D I don't think I can quite justify changing most of the front end to acheive it though.. The bumper looks spot on, but I'm not sure what trim that is above it, I don't doubt it could be figured out though Bruce, you are a terrible influence ;D volvo544special65, thanks for the info. I'm trying to absorb it but I'll have to read back at all you've given this thread so far because there's so much information about parts and model years that I had never even considered..

LOL! I can wrench on a 240 in my sleep and when I see one on the street I can in most cases tell which model year it is...maybe I have a sick mind ;D
The trim above the bumper is standard on older 240 models but I doubt that it will fit the facelifted front, not 100% sure though.

Now when you say that, it certainly is... Looks a bit different from the more common GL spoiler, maybe that's why I didn't recognize it...
