as above. Went looking for something I want and they're like 1k-1.5k here, and 5.5-8k in Euroland. whats the craic?!
Anyone living in France able to shed some light? 98-02 Peugeots by the way.

Pretty much EVERYTHING is dearer in France, sadly for me. As for cars, there is not the same mentality in UK for people to change cars often - generally speaking, a car is kept several years and run into the ground before being replaced, so the used car market is much smaller than in UK. Also, perhaps less in the cities, but in the countryside, people are real tight-wads. nothing is every given away or thrown away - old cars are parked up in peoples gardens and they would rather see it rot away to nothing than sell it cheaply. The word "depreciation" just isnt in most peoples vocabulary - Most folk seem to think that if they buy a car for €3k, then they can run it for ten years and then sell it on for €3k. There is a perfect example of this going on with my neighbour just now. On his land is an old farm trailer,which I want for the axle. Its been sitting for so long the wooden bed has rotted away and the tyres have disintegrated. Its worth nothing as a trailer and maybe €50 at best for scrap metal. He wants €900 for it, because he paid 10k francs for it years ago, so its still "worth" a grand in his eyes. This attitude seems deeply embedded in the French mentality and everyone just accepts things as they are, until they meet someonelike me. I buy my cars in UK, and the locals here curse word their pants when they find out how little I pay, even after transport and registration costs, the cars and vans I buy cost a tiny fraction of what they are worth here.

To be honest, I think cars are cheaper in the UK than pretty much anywhere else. I was surprised at the price of "bangers" in the USA and also Hong Kong when I have been there and also when looking at the online adverts for some other nations.

yep the french love to overprice everything, but if you search hard enough there are bargains to be had paid 400 notes for my polo with 2 years ticket, 700 notes for our 97 1.9TDi Passat about the only thing cheaper in france now is wine, everything else is through the roof

I think it's more a case of secondhand cars, particularly stuff over about 7 years old, being very cheap here, compared to other countries.
I was amazed at the prices of secondhand cars in the US, and particularly Australia, when I visited.
The equivalent of £3000 for a 14 year old Cortina, for example - Of course the Cortina in question (in West Australia) was in much better condition than the average 14 year old one in the UK!

I'm in Hong Kong at the moment and cars here are stupid prices. But then you're also paying a massive amount for parking. On the upside there's lots of HK taxis, which are Toyota CROWN Comfort's from the mid-80's, which are on every street corner!

Second the USA thing. You can buy a Mustang for UK Mondeo money new but second hand cars are stupid high.
My mate ended up buying a manual Honda accord (we laughed as the dealers must have fallen over themselves to shift a manual) with more mould than interior and barely a panel without peeling paint for about £3k. Two years later he sold it with about another 40k on it for about the same cash. Over here you'd be looking maybe £500 at best.

There are some good deals to be had here in France but a lot of prices are ridiculous. Especially as I want a cheap run-about with MOT that'll be up and running "straight out the box". What amazes me most are the disparities in prices between old and new cars. There was a 2001 Mégane Scénic with all sorts of gadgets including parking sensors, alloys etc for 2000€ Yet some divs are trying to sell a knackered old 2CV for the same! It's 4 to 6000€ for a good one, and absolutely no limit for anything special. Got 15 grand?

It's the same in Turkey, there was a 96 Renault Clio 1.4 RT for sale in there version of the AutoTrader and it was 6000 Turkish Lira, in Sterling that works out at £2450 (Even a mint ones not worth a grand in the UK). It's even worse once you also take into account what the average Turk earns in a year, it's really mentally expensive!

My brother refuses to buy his cars in France and as already said they still work out a lot cheaper by importing from the UK and getting it registered etc in France. He also buys his plant and machinery in the UK and even with shipping costs (last delivery he had cost £1000) he still saves loads on France prices, he even sells on plant he don't need (when he upgrades) and makes a profit.

Yeah , i agree Lot of people seem to forget huge influence of oversupply in fleet market -which accouints for @70% of new car sales I don't think other countries have such a large % dependancy on the fleet market -this is what brings prices down in UK

Mental mentality! I'm now a little worried by the US market - that means my Cadillac(s) are gonna be real dear!! Anyway, so I'll stick to the UK So who lives in Bedford and can store a shiny Peugeot for a couple of weeks till i arrange a flight
