Right, about time I started a thread for this thing. Had it over a year now and so far kept it quite hidden. Plan is while the van is off the road for winter (read, can't afford insurance) I'm tinkering with this. Its an 87 Passat GL5 Estate. 5 cylinder auto. I can't really describe it so I'll let the pictures do the talking and then guide you through some of the stuff I have done so far I bought it mostly modified. But there have been quite a few changes. First thing to go were the carbon effect bike mirrors. Replaced with Billet chopper ones (one is in the car because I kept almost breaking it off walking by it in the 'shop. Gave the interior a spruce- Replaced the gash 4 button wheel: I also relocated the front indicators into the driving lamps so they were hidden, and removed the side repeators that were off a Rover and held in with duct tape. Unfortunatly at the time it was too low. I took the springs out to compare them with Mk3 GTI ones- Now, I am all for a whack with the stick, but I was having issues working on the car full-stop ;D So the chopped Mk2 lowering springs had to go. I will bring the front down a notch or 3 when its all finished but for now I'm going to leave it for practicality Tailgate was very rusty: Got it sorted But it still needs painting properly Found some Ford escort corner bumpers and ploped them on: I like them And started sorting the issue with the 4 odd wheels (still have 2 to paint) Lastly, today I pulled off the dicey side exit bodge exhaust to find: (thats the front silencer!) What is that?? Got my hands on this: Which will go here: (see how bad the boot is? ) Didn't have much pipe left and was too lazy to get more so started to make frankenexhaust but ran out of wire ;D Thats all for now! more later!

It still has traces of the brown under the bonnet. The grille was long gone by the time I got is, as is the peep mirror. I still have the hula girl and it had half of the windscreen sticker left but that is gone. Used to look good in its glory days! I didn't think it would take too long for a pervious owner or someone who knew the car to come forward But please don't tell me you made that exhaust? Although I guess its stood the test of time

that was made when the old one fell off, don't know where that big blob of weld came from. it was so low it use to spark. I painted the flames on the bonnet and matt blacked it a day before a show and the paint was still wet when I got there the next day. that old car did me well. the guy that bought it off me still owes me £40. still got lots of pics of that if you want some.

Ahh.. Nice to have the history! Did you do the grille? I love that. The flames are great, I love them too ;D I expect that exhaust has been bodged time and time again to be fair. About time I started again- It fell off when I was driving it home from Basingstoke Hoping to get it all finished again soon, not really a lot left to do. And I'd love some more pics of it

Sadly I don't have the space and money for the plans I had when I bought it so I have to make al my repairs and have fun gettting it upto scratch and then hopefully MoTing it and putting it up for sale. And not for a lot either! Watch this space dude

sound if the price is rite and I got the funds I think when the time comes you will find the price very resonable. I know that this car owes me a lot of time and money but I also live in the real world and know its not really worth a lot of money. So I'm going to have some fun recommisioning it and then pass it on to let someone else have some trouble-free motoring in. Most likely be up for sale in the new year

Haha! Awesome! The whole story comes out! To be fair when its washed and polished up the roof does still look awesome. Its by far the best bit! It'll all get sorted back to its near former glory though

In the back?? On the roof boy! TBF my longboard wouldn't even slightly fit in the back of my b4, so unless it's a shorty you'd have fun!
I like it tho, not the grille but that's personal taste.
Looked SICK when it was brown with the flake!

Yeah, short board, only 6 ft 6",traded the minimal in for it earlier in the year & neither will go in the polo & looking for an estate with a bit of style, preferably a VW. The board is a bit worse for wear at the mo too Mananged to crack the 'glass in several places & "my" board repairer is off sick. Wanted a decent job done as Ive not had it 6 months yet. Mark

Mark Whereabouts are you in thsi fine country Mark? Might be a slight chance I'd be interested in a swap, polo for Passat, if you are interested.. Passat has the optional VW roofrails so either way it'd be a piece of curse word to carry your board, either on the roof without a naff Scene roof rack or in the back You could get a matress in this thing!
