Having had a loong list of water cooled VWs over the years, and getting a bit dissillusioned with the whole VW 'scene' thing, with the help of RR I've broadened my horizons to all makes of car, and it's made life so much more interesting!
I've found myself lusting after everything from wobbly old citroens to big power J drift stuff, although I've never had the balls to stray too far from 80s/90s VWs, just because I know what goes wrong through 10 years spent spannering the things.
I had a brief dalliance with a broken E21 3 series (bought through RR) in the summer, and so I've started looking at other Bavarian metal to have a play with. There's a little addition to the whitby family coming in February, so I fancied an E34 5 series to carry the little fella and all his kit round in. After looking at a lot of overpriced dogs, my gaze strayed up the model range, and I went to look at a car on Sunday that I really took a liking to.
I ummed and aahed, and was unsure about taking the plunge, and yesterday I read a comment Alistair made in the American Scrappage thread that really hit home:
Consequently I left a deposit on the car, and I take delivery tonight - of a 1994 BMW 740i. A brown one. 2 tons of expensive german electronics that does 13mpg round town....
Thanks RR ;D

Excellently done dude sounds ace! I too have been enjoying Alistair's pearls recently - this one I particularly enjoyed and I feel is very relevant to your purchase: If your car doesn't rock side to side when you rev the engine, well, meh, thats no car to me. WIN! ;D HC.

I was going to say, 13mpg sounds pesimistic, unless you have an issue with your right foot Congrats on the new motor, it is perchance the Champagne coloured one with brown leather that was for sale?

I've also just started a 7 series ownership, though mine's an earlier 735i straight six. retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=71985&page=1Is your's the E32 (like the shape of mine) or the later E38? Mine's a fantastic car, such quality for so little money. Mine's getting around 19-20mpg which is much better than I anticipated! The V8s should be more efficient so I expect the MPG to be higher than 13mpg! Looking forward to the photos

Cheers! It was actually an Autotrader find, really badly listed and with a tiny photograph, more of a darker bronze colour than champagne really. Thanks Rob! Mine's an early E38 with the M60B40 V8 lump. It has the dreaded Nikasil treated block but I'm pretty sure by 150k any bore wear issues would have already shown themselves if they were going to. I'll be driving miss daisy at least for a bit and see what mpg figures are achievable, good to hear that I stand a good chance of doing better than 13mpg. The road the owner lives on is a fairly steep country lane with some nasty compacted icy slush on it, so hopefully I won't ditch the thing before I get to the motorway!

Good show. V8's have this infectious thing. You can live without one until you have had one. Then you need one in your life, i tried to give them up,I'm not rich enough really, but the need for that rumble and torque just eats into you.
I used to work in a BMW main dealer when these were new and i have to say a free flow exhaust does wonders for sound and performance on them.

You should do way better than 13 mpg. My last Lexus did mid 20s on mostly town driving and thats a big modern era 4.0 V8 so you should get the same kind of numbers. Even my yankee V8s tended to do better than 13 (although the 7 litre Olds was about 14 mpg). I do like the 740 but I could never find one cheap enough when I was looking. Enjoy. Glad to play my part

Well done for taking the plunge, I think you may be happy with your purchase.
Living near a hospital I often yearn for a V8 hearing the ambulances rumble past.
