Right, I have a bit of a predicament... I had a car lined up to replace the bready... so I promised the bready to the girlfriend as shes due to pass her test soon... I had planned to sort out some small issues.. fit some new wings and spray it. then shes got a nice tidy car , and we know its faults if any and can keep tabs rather than buying an unknown for her... problem now is... said car I was going to buy, didnt happen... the old girl gave it to her daughter instead.. so I need somthing else... I was pondering the whizzkid on the classifieds here, but sorta decided against it now I think, due to the motorway miles I do. And the fact ill get bored of doing 55 constantly pretty quick... My initial thoughts are * mk2 polo coupe s *mk2 saloon *1.3 golf? *mk1 jetta as i miss mine? or thinkin outside the vw safty net, somthing old with either 5 gears or overdrive, and either tax exempt or under 1600cc if not..... argggggghhh its sooo confusing

get a b3 passat estate then. probably a bit bigger than what youre after, but...
large/heavy enough to be capable of towing safely, loads of space, 40+ mpg from all engines at 80+ mph,(they do a 1.6 but they're slow) easy to slam and rim, look good, all golf running gear so cheap and reliable on the parts front, golf coilovers fit, well built, they don't rust, and are a nice drive (even the absolute boggo cars have power steering), or get a GL and they have electric everything. I honestly think they're the best car vw ever made.

DEZ was thinking possibly a passat... but the insurance kills..... had a check and it nearly tripples and thats with a stock passat..... which I wouldnt be able to leave alone.. COUNTPANDAMONIUM not a fan of the later ladas... wouldnt mind a nice early one tho but hardly easy to find BRIANDAMAGED What are they like in all honesty? I keep seeing one local and they are very appealing..... but doubt very m way capable PAULADAF Good idea... tend to be quite cheap too... wonder if the dolly o/d box would fit or are all the 1500/1300 fwd? oh also thought possibly metro... i.e early lil mk1..... hmmmm they ever do a 5 speed?

indeed, a stock passat on a normal policy will be pricier to insure. but insure a modified one (yes its cheaper than a stocker!) on a classic policy through HIC/volksworld insurance, and the price drops hugely. the modifications serve to show its a 'cherished' car rather than a hack, so youre gunna take care of it.
how old are you, how bad is your postcode, and what state is your licence/ncb in? I'm (just)25, a+ postcode, full clean licence for nearly 8 years, 4 years no claims never had an accident, and i can insure a well modded up one with coilovers and expensive wheels for under £300.

PAULADAF Good idea... tend to be quite cheap too... wonder if the dolly o/d box would fit or are all the 1500/1300 fwd? If you go for the Toledo or Dolomite it will be rwd, just like mine which just so happens to be for sale

what ones? are they rear engined? You alright mate I'm going to suggest some non VW's for you as you will still have the bready in the family mk1 cav? nova saloon? mk3 escort combi? moggie? Carlton suzuki sj suzuki swift? corado *like the cavi...... * cant do novas... (again haha) *escorts (i know it sounds stupid but i hate the dash... but i guess thats the bit i see most sooo....) *moggie... possibly... but id have to slam it or at least fit minilites.... how easy is a 5 speed coversion? *carlton insurance kills again spesh a gsi^^) *sj would be vey cool... if i can find a solid one *swift... hmmmm not such a big fan.... *coraddo i like but again id have to do loooooads to make it look right... as i pick holes in them so much... some kool ideas there tho... realy liking the mk1 cavi and sj ideas... ill put those on the list ;D I've a couple of MK1 Passats i'm looking at selling shortly....... how much and what ones? haha indeed, a stock passat on a normal policy will be pricier to insure. but insure a modified one (yes its cheaper than a stocker!) on a classic policy through HIC/volksworld insurance, and the price drops hugely. the modifications serve to show its a 'cherished' car rather than a hack, so youre gunna take care of it. how old are you, how bad is your postcode, and what state is your licence/ncb in? If you go for the Toledo or Dolomite it will be rwd, just like mine which just so happens to be for sale haha.... in the for sale forum? cant see it or am i blind sorry dude.... don't do mk3's anymore... to many electrics... makes the lil brain explode ;D

The one above..it's been barn stored for 2 years, and needs track rod ends doing, otherwise it's a peach.....door bottoms starting to crust, but very solid otherwise, 1 owner before me, and i've done next to no miles in it. And the ginger one.... Taken all the water pipes off as it was running hot, but it's just sat since. 99% sure it's the stat, certainly no hg problems. Only has about 50k on it, again 1 owner before me, i've never used it yet!....amazing car...just remembered, needs gear linkage bushes too. No TnT on either due to being stored......£800 each, without the cups on the red one, but can do a deal if you did.
