After some advice here folks. I need to shift my Fiesta from my parents place over to my mother-in-laws where it hs a dryish garage and allmy tools awaiting it ;D It's currently SORNed, no tax, no MOT no nothing. I've had a look at transport costs and the cheapest I've been offered so far is £40. Now to me that seems a little excessive just to move a car a mile up the road, especially since there's only one single turn in the whole route Seriously, it would take 10 minutes, that works out at about £240 per hour. Geeez! Legally I don't think I'd get away with towing it would I? What other options do I have or is anyone on here local to me with a car trailer or truck laying around? I have tea and biscuits in ;D Please note: All advice (even the honest but disheartening kind) glady recieved.

unless you can a mate to take your car then i would consider the £40 just think 8 points for no insurance plus £250 fine payment for your road tax from when it expired. getting your car back from the compound £150 no mot £50? £40 is cheap when you look at them options. a few years ago i would have said sod it and drove it myself but since the old ANPR you stand out like sore thumb

any ANPR cameras enroute? do you know anyone with trade insurance? if no cameras and you MUST do it yourself; study your route, choose a quiet time of the day, get a car following close behind (a blocking vehicle, if you like ) clench your cheeks, don't crash, or be crashed into, or stopped by the politizi ;D spend the 40 quid on presents for your loved ones

40 quids a bargain, you've been given that price because the guy knows its an easy job, its not ten mins by the time he's driven to you, unhooked his ramps, winched the car on,hooked the ramps back up, tied it down, driven to the other house, untied it, put his ramps on, winched the car off, put his ramps back on, put his straps away, and driven off.
He's probably looking at an hour when he can't be doing another job and £40 an hour is nothing these days even before you have to take any other costs into consideration.

I'll probly be up in Southport in the next few days to pick up some CRX parts. If so, for a few pennies i'll bring my A-frame and drag it for you.

WHS /\/\ probably do a tenna in diesel just getting there and back again 10 mins LoL if it's that close and no cameras tow it like said with a mate behind and cover the plates, i do it all the time, how else do you get a sorned car to the MOT or a place of MOT work ? no-one takes it off sorn for that

1 mile? Just drive it. It's hardly the crime of the century is it? Make sure you are insured to drive it.

Actaully I have a better idea. Just book an MOT near to where you're going so that if you get stopped you can say you're taking it to an MOT.

Looks like Pantera's offer is your best bet but I'll mention this for the other RR's. I had a similar problem with the Manta a couple of years ago only was about 10 miles. I got crazy prices from the recovery guys cos they really don't want to do it so..... I phoned DVLA and they told me that the vehicle could be towed legally providing it was attached to the towing vehicle by means of a rigid metal bar but not a tow rope. They said that this form of semi permanent attachment, makes a car a 4 wheel trailer. This would mean that the towing vehicle would have to be substantial enough to meet the trailer regs on towing heavy trailers so a big 4x4 would be required.
Only thing to bear in mind is that before now I have had inconsistent replies from DVLA regards other matters. Followed the advice and everything was fine but didn't get stopped so the method wasn't challenged.

1 mile? Just drive it. It's hardly the crime of the century is it? Make sure you are insured to drive it. Charlie Insurance will be void as the car is sorn. Even if you have insured it you could still end up being done for driving without insurance. 9 points Driving without MOT. 3 points Any defects with the car 3 points each. You could end up loosing your licence over it if caught. Not to mention about £300 quid in fines its really not worth it pay the £40 and do it legally.

I'd pay the £40 personally, it'll save you a load of hassle and maybe even your licence.

Will probably take you up on the offer Pantera. If Arrocuda's advice is still valid then an A-frame is technically turning the Fiesta into a trailer yes? Thanks so far for the advice folks. As I said, I want to do things as legally as possible because that's the way momma brought me up

With an A frame all 4 wheels are still on the road so the rules still apply! just book it in for an MOT localy then cancel it when you realise it isnt possibly going to pass.

Take it to the MOT, let it fail, and then take it back to the place of work (ie M-I-Ls house). As long as you're insured, its fully legal. It might even pass. However, the MOT test fee is probably more than the cost of the transport, and then there's the insurance to pay as well.
Personally, for the sake of £40, I'd get the transport guy to do it.
Pauldaf44 - your insurance will cover you to drive to a pre-booked MOT, even if the car has a SORN. They might not pay out if you're advised not to drive it back and you have a crash caused by that fault, though.
