I spotted this in a paper locally recently, vague description. Made a date and drove halfway out into the countryside (like I'm not already in the sticks...) in the fading light to find an e21 shell handily stored inside a container trailer. Completely structurally sound, all panels straight... and glass and back axle and...well, thats about it really. Got on to rob0r and explained the situation. I've never had any 3-series before, and I know he has some. He told me it's a pre-facelift m10 injection engined model, and I told him the engine was in a 2002, and he said oh dear, well buy it anyway if you have the space, and I don't have the space, but sure I bought it anyway. Still, I've had more expensive nights out than what this cost... and I don't drink lol.

Only two Auto 735s, and the donor one is running badly. If we're talking fun conversions then I have a rotten but very good mechanically 525TDS I'm reducing to parts!
I'd like to stick with as much stock bits as possible if it's a rare injection pre-facelift model etc, but then again, it's all stripped and ready for something fun...

A TDS is a great idea, I had been thinking of one recently. In theory it should bolt in with E21 M20 subframes, engines mounts and gearbox...

put the tds engine in it immediately! If there's one man I knew I could stake my life on voting for a derv... well, i'm committed to my love of diesel if nothing else. If i'd more money around i'd be wanting to put a diesel in a E30 touring, and fulfill my long overdue sierra P100 td with straight out stack and tractor flapper up the back of the cab. Come on now, you have to do it, you've got the donor there, and it'd be seriously different, not slow (a lot of power to have some decent pace from such a smal body, even with a diesel), and very economical.

I'm 99% sure the tds will bolt in since the m51 block is based on the m20. Ive not seen a diesel e21 yet so you would be treading new ground. Concerns would be turbo placement though, its extremely tight under the manifold. A cracking idea though!
Your easiest bet is to go m10 or m20 as they were designed for the car, but the subframes are specific. Id go for m30 for power or tds for awesomeness and wtf factor!

Another vote for tds power here, turbo placement would be an issue though i think as space is pretty tight with an m20 but having said that there are plenty of 20 turbo motrs running in E30s so it is doable i reckon. I have a 323i baur here which is going to get broken. body is very bad and the engine is dead but all the bits you need are there! Have to let me know if you need any bits as it is currently a customers car who either wants it back this week to break or will sell it to me for breaking. has discs all round and the m20 subframe, gearbox will mate up to a tds and still give the speedo reading to standard clocks, also has decent twin tanks with return, ideal for diesel.

OK, time for an update on this one too. I mean, I've only had it 9 months... Does anyone remember that I had a 635csi? I took some parts for the E21 in exchange when I sold it in Jan. So today, I fitted the crossmember, front struts and ARB. Everything went reasonably smoothly, and I put new nuts and bolts in where I could. Rob, I've since figured out that the M51 diesel wasn't based on the M20, it was based on the M50. That's why the 324td engine that we never got in the UK was an M21 - it was based on the M20. So, if I want to make it a diesel, I'll have to find someone who, say, tuned the life out of an E30 324td estate in Lithuania, then drove to NI with it, then bought a newer BMW and swapped the 2.4 out for an M50 so they could drift the E30, leaving a hot, modified, uprated M21 diesel going spare. Sounds a bit too precise, doesn't it

Loving the diesel idea, would love to drop a td lump in my e30, would be awesome! Failing that I've got a spare M42 lump laying about
