That's really, really silly. I LOVE IT!
Always had a soft spot for these since I used to wing the Corgi Junior version up and down the hall at home!

Quality! I'd have never picked this as your hypermiler.....................
...............but I can actually quite picture you and Becky in it.
Enjoy the lunatic handling until you drop it ;D

That's fantastic! My friend came to visit in his Dyane when I lived in Cornwall, and we drove all over the place in it. Absolutely barking mad handling - I honestly thought it was going to tip over, until I realised that that's how it's meant to handle. MUCH better than some anonymous ecobox! You're gonna have so much fun!

Cheers for the positivity guys. I'm very excited about this car. The only limitation is my budget ;D
Ryan, It's very different to the Volvo, but I couldn't just buy a modern ecobox because I'd be bored senseless with it and/or have to spend lots to make it how I wanted it.. Probably not most people's first idea of retro cheap mileage.. It wasn't mine but I saw the advert and started smirking to myself, so I had to buy it!
Having had a little look about, I've compiled a bit of a list of stuff I want to do. Mostly service stuff so I know where I am with it Oil and filter (must find out what sort of filter it is, I think it may just be a strainer in the sump) Gear oil Air filter Check the condition of the sparkplugs because I have no real idea how well it's actually running. Replace the broken bonnet release cable Electric windscreen washers.. That foot pump is rubbish Radio.. I'm on the blag for anything spindlemount that works so I can listen to whatever is still broadcast on MW and/or hack a line in Lower! I oiled my tierods last night so hopefully it will free them up a bit for when I have a bash at the weekend.
Most of it at the weekend, the electric bits as and when I come by the bits to make them happen

Unusual choice for a mile muncher..
out of interest, how many miles you planning on using daily, I'm smirking hoping its a 100mile daily commute and all the people in the modern daily's (me included there) will have their days brightened seeing you cruise along
We pass a daily used beetle on the M4 every morning and it always makes me smile..
Good choice sir and I'm interested to see how it evolves and how mpg's you get

Good choice sir and I'm interested to see how it evolves and how mpg's you get My commute will be 30 miles each way, 5 days a week.. 60 miles a day, about 14,500 miles a year. At the moment it's still only 5 miles but I do occasionally do the longer commute when I'm staying at Becky's. Glad you like it. I think a reliable 50mpg is a good aim. Improving my driving style is going to make the biggest difference it's a normal spin on one, then? Cool. I didn't notice one when nosing about. I'll look closer when I next open the bonnet. Cheers for the link as well. I can see funds disappearing there! Rustproofing is high on the list. I'll be going over it before the weather turns. PM on it's way

With the gearbox oil, the drain is on the bottom, the filler is on the side. Drain whatever slop is in there and refill with new oil. Transforms the gearchange. When refilling, you squirt it in until it starts coming out. Let it drain for several minutes - if there's too much oil in there, it'll be forced out and burns off on the exhaust. Which stinks! (not that I'd know...)
Change the oil every 3000 miles, grease the kingpins/driveshafts/knife edges every 1000 miles and it should easily handle that sort of mileage, though as Neil says, investing in some anti-rust stuff is a VERY good idea!

Ben - it's not wrong to hurl it into roundabouts at all. All part of the fun! Besides, you don't want to slow down for stuff too much - takes to long to build speed up again! (That's my excuse anyway...) Its worth it just for the look of pure horror on faces of other road users as you heal across their bows at an obscene angle with your tyres shreiking. By the time they realise that they are not about to witness a major accident, you are gone! Also , speed cameras are your friend, they level the playing field very nicely. Regards, DW

Heh, DW is already here... he reminded me of a little something you could do for me with a tape measure. Could you get me the dimensions of the rear wings on your car? I think they're too short and tall but my memory isn't always the best, but they could serve as a great base for the spats I want to make if they're long enough... that is, a pair of wings off another Dyane, not the ones off your car, I hardly think you'd thank me for stealing bits off your daily.

Haha, another vehicle we have in common. Dyane or 2CV, all good... ;D Get it dropped, there's no real detriment to the handling and they look epic slammed. The only real problems I had when going as far down as they will was regularly taking the bottom off the front exhaust box. It's quite complicated internally so you can't just chop it out either. I modded most of mine on a student/first job budget, so it involved paint stripping the bodywork, winding down the suspesnion and probably my worst mod was a pair of Capri 3ltr front seats. Heavy? uhuh... Baby turbo or Ducati carbs were the hot mod when I had mine, but always out of budget. One of my favourite cars ever, all though I have to confess to killing my last Dyane by the side of the road when the alternator belt went. CAD 272T, still got the logbook somewhere and that must have been seventeen years ago. Enjoy it, they're great (but you already know that)

We clearly both have excellent taste, eh? I have to confess that I was eying up your Landy feature in Retro Cars for a bit of inspiration as well!
Exhaust box? I have a welder.. this can be sorted ;D
A question now.. Winding down the suspension on the tierods. They have a little slotted bit where you're meant to use the Special Tool to avoid damaging them, but I don't have one, so can I just use a spanner/molegrips or is there another way to do it without hurting them?
