Fronting and not declaring mods to insurer

risk you take with not declaring mods... although it is *not* made easy for young drivers to insure cars, never-mind modified car!!

Life isnt easy, if your a young driver and you cant afford to insure a car, then you have to walk, same us old farts did when we were young, you earn the right to insure looney motors for pennies with age and experiance, i was dangerous enough in a 1600 mk1 escort when i was young let alone in anything with real speed.

No the passenger died because the person fronted and lied on an insurance quote to make them able to drive a car with an insurance document, if they had not done this then they wouldn't have been able to afford the insurance and probably wouldn't have been able to drive the car , in theory the accident wouldn't have happened ( its all very theoretical though, they probably would have still drove without insurance)

no, but the passengers family will now struggle to get compensation for his death despite the driver being convicted for the offence, the woman who lied on the form will probably now be refused insurance by that company and you have to declare that to any other company you try and get insurance from, thats gonna double your premium at least, so its extra pain and heartache for the family of the dead guy, prison for the driver, and bloody expensive insurance for the next ten oir so years for the mother, all to save a few quid on a policy.

back in the day, it was much cheaper to insure cars. My cousin recently passed his test and to go on his sisters standard ford ka, the cheapest so far is £2200

to be fair i think the No insurance bit of the story is a more of a sideline from the actual story of the driver being jailed.

Rather than a , If your not insured everyone is going to die sorta story...

Allowing for inflation I'm not sure how much insurance has really gone up for young drivers. I bet he can beat £2200 unless he's already got points or something. its no excuse though. If you can't afford it you can't have it. My first insurance cost me a month's wages.

EDIT: I just ran a quote for a 17 year old student living at home on a 2000X Ford Ka base model. FFS! My best price from them Merekats is £4197!

my first road car (back in '83) cost me the equivelant of 3 months wages to insure, i don't think its gone up that much compared to wages and the cost of living, its always been expensive for young drivers, what HAS changed is the cheaper availabilty of high performance cars so we do see some high quotes as its much easier to get hold of a looney car for sensible money.

where it happened is as important as anything else. hadleigh is just through southend on the a13, on the way out towards the east end of london, and lakeside. its a rat run between lakeside and southend seafront for the 'cruzerz' on a friday and saturday night.

southend police love to sit along route and pull anyone young-ish looking in a non-standard car, just to try to catch out those driving modified cars on standard car policies. not particularly a bad thing to be honest, but annoying when they decide to pull me when I'm at my girlfriends. I just wave my trade certificate at them and I often don't even have to get out the car.

tbh, as with most low level local paper journalism, the story is a load of Bullplop.
the jist of it is the semi-unfortunate passenger probably didnt have his seatbelt on if he got thrown out the window, plus he'd already got into his mates chavved up corsa to go for a 'cruz', so he knew what he was getting himself into. the driver, was young, inexperienced, and more than likely driving like a cock whilst trying to show off to his mates in other cars if he managed to crash on that roundabout.
lots of us have been there, done similar, but mostly without such serious consequences.

id fully expect it was 'his' car insured in his mother name to keep costs down, same reason the mods werent declared. I'm sure a lot of people have done that too. i know that back when i was 18 paying a load for a modified policy ,more than a few of my mates were driving cars that didnt exactly match what thed got it insured as. it just wasnt as much of an issue back then.

hundreds if not thousands of people do it all over the country every day, and will keep happening, as long as the cost of yound people insuring cars is so high, and that is what will keep the cost of insurance so high for young drivers, cos they're young and know best.......until it all goes wrong.

I suppose it could end up with the mother being sued and even risk loosing her home as she is the one signed the insurance forms !

A chap I know on another forum, his mum is a solicitor who makes a lot of money either defending people who are being personally sued after accidents with no insurance, or makes her fortune from doing the sueing. I forget which. Give someone brain damage and you are in for £500,000 easy.

It's always an interesting debat on young drivers insurance.
When i was 17 i went n my Dad's trade policy, which enabled me to drive anything, fully comp, for a mere £250 a year (1990)
However, i was unable to buy any stupidly fast cars to take full advantage of this, as the concept of silly fast motors for beer money just didn't exist.

I don't condone it in any way, but can totally understand why so many people drive on either falsified or completely non-existant insurance.
Even my Dad can kinda understand it.

I don't believe that the premiums have risen proportionally with inflation, cost of living, wages increases at all.

Also noted the usual media 'hype' over the 'souped up' Vauxhall Corsa. I know most chavs believe it, but since when did a bodykit and pimp rims make a car faster ??

(I take the phrase 'souped up' to mean performance enhanced)

I had to pay my way right from passing my test when i was 17, my dad paid the insuance the first year (couldnt have it monthly being 17) and i payed him back!

i did find adding my dad as a named driver brought the cost down, but that was perfectly legal, my car, my policy.

When i insured my first modified car, i was 19, and i was damn surpised how cheap it was, silly really as most the things id done didnt put the price up at all, they just wanted to know, and those that did put the price up, didnt put it up by much! With the right specialist companys the modded car can be cheaper than the standard car would be with the normal daily companys. Crazy.

This story has been going around for months. The BBC were talking about the mother being prosecuted for fronting back in the early summer and before that at the inquest there had been talk of him racing just before the accident.

It's all about attitude and responsibility. Someone who chooses to commit insurance fraud won't give a toss about consequences. His bodykitted Corsa is wellwikkidfast because he drives it everywhere on the redline and beats M5s in TLGPs all the time and will be telling his mates how he beat that old git who shouldn't have a fast car of he can't drive it fast.

What does surprise me is that 23 is not particularly young. If he couldn't afford to insure a Corsa at that age, I wonder what his driving and insurance history was like?

My sympathy levels for all concerned are somewhat on the low side. In the case of the deceased, sounds like a victory for Darwinian theory to me.

I'm going to set the cat among the pigeons. the insurance co should still cough up to the victims. yes the policy may have been invalid, but they still took the money. if it had been a minor bump would they have paid up, i suspect so.
i thought to minimum premium in effect covered the risk of causing death in an insurance policy.
i think its about time this countrys Insurance and RFL is reformed!

Back when I was 18, a looooong time ago I bought a Series 3 Sunbeam Alpine , sportscars were performance stuff in those days. It was 10 years old and I paid £125 for it and the first year TPF&T with one yeras driving experience, no ncb , was £125 , I was earning about £15 a week ,so about 9 weeks wages . Not unlike the premium would be proportionately nowadays.

Tis a strange one - I'd expect Diamond to pay out to the passenger's family and then recover off their insured. Bit unfair that the MIB - which we all subsidise by paying correct premiums - is paying out. This is the sort of thing that pushes insurance up.

He did get in the car of his own free will though. I'm sure he had a good idea of how his mate drove.
