Hey RRers, feeling a bit let down by my (semi)retro today.
MOT's out 20th January(Gulp) and I noticed the exhaust sounding suspiciously blowy about 3 weeks ago. I've been too busy to get it checked over xmas, but I finally took it in to the local tyre an exhaust place yesterday, and they had it up on the ramps.
Diagnosis? Booogered middle section and backbox.
Damage? 220 of my hard earned £'s.
That sounds a bit dear to me? It includes fitting + parts, I plan to get another opinion today, but I thought no harm in asking you guys too! The car is a 1991 Toyota Corolla Saloon.
Thanks in advance!

get on ebay /google and see what the new part costs
you see custom built stainless systems for around that , so that may be a better option

I had a full manifold back bespoke stainless system (with lifetime warranty) built on the car to my design for £250, so yeah, thats pretty steep.

Could have been worse, my sister went to a local tyre and exhaust place (we've been going there for years), and to repair the middle and back box (not replace, just weld up) she was quoted £270 , what was this rare and hard to find for car.......... a 2000 Fiat punto 1.2 needless to say it was replaced instead by a different garage all in for much less

Thanks for the replies! Eidolon thanks for looking those up, I don't know why I didn't think ebay right away! I may well try fitting it myself, I've not done an exhaust before but it can't be too hard. I just need a place to do it :/ I'm quite liking the idea of a custom exhaust too though, I wouldn't mind getting the exhaust note little more BTCC style and releasing a few more horses.

Panda Matt- I (Moderately) feel her pain, it was a bit of a shock to hear him come out with that much. We've been going to this place for years too. I should have got them to check out the o/s/f CV joint too, as that was an advisory on last years ticket

I avoid those places if possible, was in my local one getting a puncture fixed a while ago, guy in front of me was questioning his bill for brakes (shoes, pads, discs etc), £940 odd , was some modern Renault thing, Laguna i think ?

Avoid the the big tyre 'n' zorst places like the plague.
Ring round your local back street places, I got a middle and back section fitted on my Rover 216 last year for £75 all in, some places wanted twice that.
And I had part worn 195/65X15 fitted on the O/Hs Vectra this morning for a tenner at a garage that could quite easily have been in the back streets of Mogadishu...

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

...I've not done an exhaust before but it can't be too hard. I just need a place to do it :/ Did the downpipe on mine a little while ago-Kwik Fit wanted about £130 to supply & fit-the local motor factors had the part for under £30! I'm not an experienced mechanic by any means, but I did it in the road-and the middle section and back box are a lot easier. Axle stands will give you plenty of room to get at it.

My exhaust rotted and fell off just before christmas, cant see any point replacing it till the MOT at the end of next year sounds lovely...
That said a full new system including 2 large cats for the car (4.6 Range Rover) is about £320 so i'd say your price sounds very steep

To be honest, not really. If you can't do it yourself, and went to a retail operation, then it's about right. Of course it's cheaper going to the factors and doing it yourself, and it will also be cheaper going to a self-employed wrencher with low overheads and no staff. For who you asked, it's not expensive. You can get it done cheaper though.
