Leaving the hot rod meet up in Derby everybody (even sensible folks like Paul) were lighting them up and leaving black stripes (heck Mr Purple 'Cuda couldn't even do a 3 point turn without burning out LOL) so I though, nah, best not to. I'm one of those sensible cruising drivers mostly. My sensible voice was telling me all the reasons I shouldn't, the motor is still cold and to be honest with 2.76 cogs and a tall first the Oldsmobile is not the ideal burnout machine, although... big block torque...
well)
so I potter across the car park but theres a bunch of folks all standing watching and I can feel the anticipation, and see the blakc stripes everyone else left, so as I come up to the exit I slip into neutral, rev hard a couple of times just to clear the carb as she runs a little stuttery someimes when she's just started up, click back into Drive and then hit the brake and the accelerator hard... woah, smoke, gently release the brake and she rolls forward smoking nicely, not sure if it looked OK from the outside but I'd got the smell of burn in the car![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
Anyway, rolling home I come back into Nottingham I come up to a pedestrian crossing and sitting on a wall just by it are a bunch of kids. Now I don't speak chav but they were shouting stuff at me and I recognised a few swear words. Just as I rolled up to the lights they turned green and I decided to give 'em some smoke. As I was rolling I thought I'd neutral drop it to break out the back... So I click into neutral, rev it on up and drop it into drive at about 4K. I was expecting the thing to break loose, loads of smoke and take off down the road blowing smoke like a good 'un. What actually happened was a big cloud of smoke, a shreik from the tyres and then a series of loud bangs almost causing the car to hop - and then I lost all drive... Luckily this was on a down hill stretch so I didnt have to clatter to a halt right in front of the kids...
I pushed the car to the side of the road, realised I didn't have my mobile with me to call the AA and then the motor died as well.

Luckily it started up again OK and I could get drive in 1st so I limped on a bit, tried 2nd, but nothing, limped on a bit, tried second, seemed to be OK. limped on at 30 in second, tried D and nothing. left it a bit and tried D again and it shifted slugishly into top followed by another loud clonk from the trans which momentarily locked the rear wheels!!!!![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)
After this I drve it gently home and it seemed to run normally up & down the gears but when I got home and got out the damn thing stank of cooked trans fluid.
What a frikkin fool. What kind of numpty neutral drops a 40 year old transmission? Especially from a roll...
Especially when I was laughing my ass off a while back about some lad who'd neutral dropped his Chevy Nova at a cruise and blown the trans...
Funnily enough one of the cars' previous owners was there and offered me a seal kit for the trans. Must take him up on that and I think its probably time for a rebuild before it gives up the ghost. I might even look at putting a T700R4 into it.
Note to self: do not drive like a dick on public roads, do not abuse old cars, only initiate burnouts from in gear...
So I spent ages feeling like a right retard.
