I drove from Leeds to Bristol in a car with no tax & MOT to a booked in MOT, using my "drive any insured car" clause. Nobody batted an eyelid and I drove past a few traffic cars. You may have got away with it but I don't think it's to be recommended. The law requires cars to have 3rd party insurance at all times when on the road so if you stop for a wee or to get some cash or whatever, that car ceases to be insured when you get out of it. A bump would open up a world of pain. My "Driving other cars" provision requires the car to be insured under another policy (and to not be owned by me or my wife).

Day insurance isn't really available. Add the car to your insurance for the day and you'll get the cover note to show the police if you need to. Book an MOT at two MOT centres - and drive back and forth between the two all day. If you get pulled then you're on your way to an MOT. Don't crash though because if you crash a car without an MOT the insurance wont pay out! Happy days. Charlie Do I can't take my insured car on the road for an MoT at all then? You don't need a valid MoT to take your car for a pre-booked test. It is, therefore, hard to see how they could refuse a claim for a car being used in accordance with the law in normal circumstances. It is something to bear in mind though because they might look closely at it if you crash in Newquay and your MoT is booked in Glasgow.

My MKII Golf Driver. I'd only just discovered this site then and didn't really know what to do with it so it went (as did my TSW EVOs).
I miss my Alfa 156 terribly. I've become quite fond of my old Audi but I miss turquoise leather, the raspy exhaust, pin sharp steering....... But it wasn't getting used, the fuel pump went, the MoT ran out, it needed a timing belt etc. To put it right would have cost more than it was worth and it still wouldn't have got used.

Nice car. I miss my 156 terribly but I reckon my next Alfa will have to be a 155. Have you joined www.alfaowner.com too? Not too many 155 owners on there but one or two.

I first snapped this one about a year ago. Subsequently it went onto someone's drive and they did some work. It's now a right bloody mess with a rough coat of primer not really hiding some very rusty bits. I think the tax is out so I expect it'll vanish soon.

Is it on your Manta? Why not convert the driver's side reverse light with a red led cluster bulb instead? Joe Quite a common mod on Minis that to lose the ugly stuck on one. Technically I'm not 100% sure it's legal because the fog has to be a certain distance from either the tail light or brake light (can't remember which) but mine got through an MoT like that.

At that age a lot of the ebay ones will be compatible. My one kit will read it, if your close to me id be happy to read the code for a you. That is provided you make a good cuppa ;D I make a blinding brew but Lampeter is a long way from Bolton. Cheers anyway. I think it's probably worth buying the gear as 'er indoors' cars aren't going to get older.

Part of me thinks it would be better if the engine was concealed a bit more but another part think "well if you've got it....".

Not a retro question but hopefully the mods will indulge me.
My wife's '03 Volvo S40 has decided to turn the engine management warning light on today coupled with a distinct drop off in performance. I'm thinking this might be the time to invest in some kit to read the fault codes rather than guessing what might have caused it or, shock horror, paying someone.
From what little I know it's an OBDII set up but there are a million different readers out there ranging from £5 kit from Hong Kong to stuff costing hundreds. There's also an android phone app but I don't know what I need to hook up the phone to the car.
Any advice on how to extract the fault code(s) gratefully received.

The DOHC does sound good with a cone filter on it, I have to agree. I'm tempted to attack the airbox on my Audi with the spade drill bits over christmas to make it sound a bit more rorty now.

Not as helpful as I'd hoped. Your airbox and the resonator box will be at the front RHS. The idle valve was aomewhere hear the left hand strut mount I think.

If it's the injected one it has an air filter box and another resonator box. If it's a 57i kit then, as popuptoaster says, it'll replace all of that and also have some plumbing for the idle control valve.
Somewhere in the depths of my photobucket account I have a pic of a fitted kit I think, I'll have a look.
