A few years ago the good old ford pinto was thrown into just about anything that moved along with the 5 speed box. You even had a choice of sumps with the alloy RS2000, they have been chassis mounted or mounted on all manor of fabricated mounts. BUT They are hard to find now but with an easy 100BHP and no special electric boxes to mess about with it might be worth thinking about

found the remains of the aux belt under the cam belt, which had resulted in the cam belt jumping 3 teeth. lucky that no other damage was done and now runs ok. Starter motor was "just one of those things" which happened to go at the same time. Had to replace the battery as well as it was on its last legs. so to date because of the fan belt going it cost new belt new starter new battery

new starter fitted and at least it will turn over but it wont fire, now looking at to see if the cam belt has jumped a tooth or two. I can only think that as the aux belt went a bit of it had got under the bottom pulley of the cam belt. Just seems strange that all these have happened together. Belt was changed around 40k miles ago so its near to be changed anyway. I'm back at work for a few days but got someone checking the cam belt and checking if the pullies are still in line

right, I took a jump pack and connected it straight to the starter and got nothing so in my mind the starter is knackered. I guess the belt going was totally unconnected to the starter fault. Will be changing the starter in the next few days and ill let everyone know the results.
sqonk No I didn't turn the key to the cranking stage so you might have something there and a lesson learnt
THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE HELPED, ill update when I get anything to report

I tried turning the key, it just wouldn't start. I can get the starter to turn the engine over so thought I might have been the starter hence the idea of tow starting it. All the normal ignition lights come on the dash with no warning or fault lights. The aux belt is on the nearside well away from anything that it could damage when it failed. I took the oil cap off and turn the engine over by hand and everything seemed to be turning ok, but even if the belt had slipped the started would still spin. I'm at a lose to it now Thanks to everyone who has helped

ok, I cant get my head round this, I tried a tow start and it didn't want to fire at all, so I guess that rules out the starter. Anyone got any ideas ??

just seems strange that it was running fine, no problems starting the car then the aux belt went and now it wont start, as far as I can see the aux belt even if it whipped its way off as it snapped couldn't have done any damage. I did get the starter to turn the engine over briefly when I first changed the belt but then nothing, it fired up but wouldn't run then it just started to click on the solenoid. got the usual ignition lights on the dash with no warning lights to say anything is wrong

don't think so as I can turn the engine over by hand with the wheel raised and the engine in gear, if I turn the wheel with my foot I can see the engine turning and the aux belt doing its thing with the alternator turning ok, thanks for the suggestion though I need the car for a 100 mile trip on Monday so I'm getting a bit desperate now

HI, I bought a 2002 ford fusion 1.4 diesel and on its first run the aux belt snapped on the motorway, we had to get recovered back home at a cost of £168 ouch Anyway got the car home and changed the belt the next day and now the car wont start, it just clicks, so I thought its the battery as we had the hazard lights on for a couple of hours waiting for the recovery truck, so charged the battery up overnight and it still wont start. I have now swapped the battery out of another car and the same thing (the old battery will start the car that I swapped it over for). I have jacked one wheel up and the engine turns over if I turn the raised wheel when its in gear. My thoughts are maybe the starter motor Has anyone got any thoughts ?? ( had a quick rummage around for the starter motor but not found it yet)

Get some rubber washers from the plumbers or B&Q for the bolts one each on the inside should do it or use PTFE tape

doesn't sound like big ends to me, try simple things first. make sure nothing is loose or broken especially around belts and pulleys . then try disconnecting things like alternator, fans etc to see if you can rule them out
