Okay we all know that MGB GTs are the ultimate buffers car. We don't see that many interestingly modified ones. So what would you do to one to modify it intrestingly? One proviso, if you want more power,.. no MG/Rover V8 ,..

Oooh that would go well with what I had bouncing round my head,... Play up the "bristish-ness" of it and paint it up like a world war 2 fighter plane,.. Could Americanise it a bit with the teeth along the grill.

As for the MGB........ try and turn it in to an estate somehow and put a nitros fed Chevy lump in the back? Maybe a twin engined one.....!

I am actually thinking of one of these as an everyday road car!
It is a proper car, rear wheel drive and no power assistance on the steering and brakes. The rear hatch is useful for transporting things (mountain bike), spares availability is very good, and there is no road tax.
The car will hold its value.
Modifications:
Telescopic dampers, poly bushes and a modern engine. I am unsure of which engine but I would look at a turbo diesel, or one of the compact V6 motors.

Liking these ideas ,.. in some ways John's Tubro Diesel is the one most likely to annoy the purists. My dad is looking to offload his MGB I think, he keeps broaching the subject when I visit,.. so maybe ... one day.... I've been thinking along the lines of dark coloured sebring bodykitted, slammed, dechromed, smoothed, with nice deeeeep cup polished alloys. Super minimal interior (in black and white). Something stonking up front, Twin charged J or Italian engine.

What about a rally look (cage, buckets, wide minilites, not perfect bodywork) with a Mazda rotary engine. It's light as hell, so the handling will be great, and I think it will connect to a Type 9 gearbox, besides, the early 90s ones had turbos and everything so you can easily make 200bhp. There's one in a local scrappie, but it's the early model, so it 'only' has 115bhp, but that's enough, it could be tuned to 150 probably without turbos.

Oooh Rotary engined MGB interesting,...
Additionally to the WW2 plane look would be steels wheels painted the same colour as the body (Like RACER's old Austin). Satin paint would also be a must.

I still like the 4.2 Jag engine idea, It'll sound like a fighter plane as well as looking like one. Put an MGC bonnet on for it's power bulge, luvverly. ;D

I think i'd fit a VHPD K series engine, an LSD and modernise the suspension (tele dampers and properly locate the rear axle) But to an immaculately restored original spec MGBGT with wire wheels and chrome bumpers etc.
I would then drive around wearing a cloth cap and string backed driving gloves - and blow away Saxo/Nova drivers whilst shouting out 'tally ho' and other similar typically english gestures ;D
P.S; I also have a passion for old aeroplanes - the Spitfire's Rolls Royce engine must come pretty much at the top of my list for 'best sounding engine' - sends a tingle down my spine whenever I hear one.

Me doing the 'tally ho' english thing would just confuse people, seeing as I'm Scottish. Maybe I should be traditionally Scottish, by painting the Imp tartan, riding around in it in a kilt, with a haggis in my sporran, and pulling up at the traffic lights playing the bagpipes...
Or not. ;D

Turbo diesel and an autobox would be sure to upset the purists ;D
I think an S13 200SX engine would be spot on in an MGB. 169bhp stock and lighter than a B series but easily as compact. PLus it's still 1.8. The lever arms would have to go but I'd keep the wishbone front end. I'd have to go to IRS on the back though to try and get some ride quality too.

Turbo diesel and an autobox would be sure to upset the purists ;D Indeed! I don't know about other marques, but the current generation VW Diesels are very impressive. My daydream fantasy upgrade for my Golf has been an VAG 1.8T transplant, but the torquey 200+bhp diesels are VERY attractive! Wonder how heavy they are? Wouldn't want to upset the handling...
