Bought my Passat B3 1.8 gt off ebay with 245,000 on the clock, it was the best £345 i ever spent. The previous owner was totally anal about it and kept every reciept for every penny he ever spent on it. It didnt have a dent or scratch anywhere and had only ever had service parts, the head had never been off. I drove it 2,000 miles to Spain right through France and back and it never missed a beat. ![](http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff60/DoobieB3/15082007007.jpg) it often carried close to a ton of tiles in the back ![](http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff60/DoobieB3/15032008046.jpg) It got written off while parked outside my house by an 18 year old child in a clio at 255,000 miles. I still miss it.

I had a Saab 9-3 last year with 240,000 miles on the clock, still tight and had an immaculate cloth roof. My mini's got about 130,000 which I'm rapidly increasing ;D and my 924 has 165,000 on it. Mileage has never put me off as they've all been fully stamped up!

It seems to be mostly German cars that can cover serious mileage with the odd large engine yank, wheres the Fords, BMC and Toyota's there must be some that are capable of covering some distance above the 200K mark

I had a 1.9tdi 110 passat that had done 200k when I sold it still on the original clutch was my daily for ages did 130k in it two cambelts, discs and pads and about 25 oil changes and still did not use a drop of oil and easily did 50mpg! Also just got rid of a e39 528 that had only done 130k but used litres of oil a week ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) I once also had a volvo 460 with the 1.7 renault engine that had done 277k the old geezer who I bought it from commuted from sheffield to brum every day in it 7 days a week. I would love to buy buy a brand new motor and see how many miles I could get out of it, but I cant afford a new car so will see how many my fiesta daily will get lol

My daily 2001 E46 320d was bought in June on 163k and has just past 170k this week. Just routine servicing has been reqiured. I agree german motors do seem to handle high mileage.

It seems to be mostly German cars that can cover serious mileage with the odd large engine yank, wheres the Fords, BMC and Toyota's there must be some that are capable of covering some distance above the 200K mark We (my father in law then me) ran a B reg Montego 1.3 from under 10,000 miles to over 200,000. To be fair I changed the engine for a low mileage Maestro lump at around 170,000 due to excessive bore wear. This was a badly repaired rolled over write off (father in law was conned thinking a year old car couldn't have had such happen to it) that was also later stolen and recovered so had a hard life yet still easilly sold when surplus. Highest mileage car I have personally owned was a 2002 Skoda Octavia which I had back in 2008. In its 6 years on the road it had racked up 170k. It's still kicking around now with circa 230k on the clock. Basic spec 1.6 petrol as well, not even a diesel!
I've had loads of higher mileage cars that have been totally reliable, I think service history and the general condition of the car is more important than the mileage.
My 27yr old Mercedes 190 only has 75k on the clock and I find that I'm replacing stuff that has just kind of worn out with age/standing around unused more than anything! Should be good for over 200k though ;D

There's an 80's Accord that hit a million a couple of months ago, think it was on Jalopnik. So hopefully, our Civic should last a long time, if the rust doesn't kill it ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

2.6 million on the same engine is this truly possible !!! How many rebuilds and how much could possibly be original, triggers broom comes to mind it's completely original apart from 5 new brushes and 7 handles. www.designnews.com/document.asp?doc_id=224419The engine has been rebuilt once - at 680,000 miles - and it's had a few other things (eg a replacement 3rd gear synchro, carb rebuilds every 900,000 miles, etc.), but it's otherwise just routine maintenance. So the engine's done over 2,000,000 miles since it's only rebuild. At a guess, I'd suggest that the key to the long life is twofold: 1) Being driven with mechanical sympathy, on long journeys - very few cold starts or short journeys (which cause inordinate amounts of wear) here. 2) Decent maintenance - oil and filter changes every 3000-5000 miles for example.

We have a daily Astra 2006 1.9 cdti 150. We bought it just under 3 years old with 85k on it. It's now done 500 miles short of 140k and still looks and feels like new. Only routine servicing an alternator and an egr valve replacement.

someone who used to live up the road from me had a rover p5 which apparently did 450k on its original engine. when that dies he put a landy tdi engine in lol
my dad being a taxi driver regularly uses a 2006 skoda octavia with 260,000 on the clock. strangely enough the older one only has 160k and has more problems

I haven't owned anything much over 230-240k (mostly E34 BMWs) but at the minute I'm breaking an E32 735i manual which is on a pretty brave (at 19mpg) 187k!

my old t reg golf 1.9 non turbo had 245000 miles on it when I got. I put 10.000 on it then sold it to my sister who used it every day for 3 years doing 95 miles a day for work. she sold it to my brother who drove it all over europe for work.
it used more tyres and brakes. same clutch and had oil and fillters done every 5000 miles.
it even took a wack in the back bumper when my brother had it and he sold it with well over 450.000 miles. its still going now

I know of a Merc taxi that has covered over a milion kilometers. The engine gets cold about 2 times per year, when it's in for a service. The engine is and always has been on operating temperature, as drivers switch during theyr shift. First engine & gearbox, never gets cold, regular maintainance. My own cars have covered: - W123 200T: 330.000km - W124 200TE: 278.000km - W123 230TE: 220.000km - Mini: god knows ;D I would guess 200k+, but 100% sure not with it's original runing gear ;D The others still have (had) they'r original organs ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) My ex-250TD had a replacement speedo; it showed 350k - but judging by wear of various components I guess 500-600.000 is not impossible. Oh, and a Merc 190D I knew had 800.000km showing on the odometer. But it was realy rough... ;D [edit] Oh, and I know a VW T5 bus which allready is on 550km (long distance taxi & courier) ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

I read somewhere that cold starts not only massively decrease the working life of an engine, they actually degrade the engine oil much faster too. This article quoted some scientific test where the results proved you could do around 25,000 miles on the same oil if you never let it get cold without any detrimental effects on engine health. Thus you could extract mega mileages from an engine with near zero wear if you never let it go stone cold as DieselWeasel says. Perhaps this explains how that Volvo can go so far with just 1 engine rebuild, also as many German saloons are built for mile munching I wonder if this also explains why they last for so long?

How many rebuilds and how much could possibly be original, triggers broom comes to mind it's completely original apart from 5 new brushes and 7 handles. Only one. And when he pulled it apart they found the inside was perfect so put most of it back together again.
