Remember those cars you used to see in Street Machine, the ones that were kind of a precursor to the whole Retro thing, the ones that fell outside the standard Rod and Custom circles? Cars like this : and this : or the Chris Hay/Dave Rothwell Husky www.beardmorebros.co.uk/website%20pages/Magazine%20Articles/Huskycc2.html Currently I'm considering trying to get a line up together like the B289 VW line ups, but for Street Machine cars... so... what do you remember, and does anyone know where they are now?

I miss Street Machine mag. Nobody builds stuff like that anymore. I think somebody should start making the mag (and that style of cars) again.

That Husky was really nicely put together, the detail was great on it. Sadly I had to throw away boxes of Street Machine magazines last year, I couldn't even give them away.

One of my favorites was the 2 door PB Cresta,I saw it at Donny Custom show once I always thought it was way ahead of it's time and a very sorted car

Just MOTed this today for a customer, after a lengthy zetec conversion to replace the tired pinto it was built with, and update of various parts. I don't know when it was built, but its very street machine style.

Cool pic Dan!
I'm guessing neither of the Burnham-chopped Escort wagons survived?

I don't think Henry hirise is street machine car in the slightest. It's too old for starters, and far more custom car in its build style.

Puddys Mk2 Cortina is alive and kicking, He is just about to put a new Axle underneath it, And I know Richards Nicholls Cresta still exists, a couple of others that have not been mentioned that I do know about that are still in existance, Dave Lowes Baby Blue Devon is still in his ownership. and gets driven Regularly. Nick Manns Morris Is alive and kicking I think on Jersey, so is Charly Tailors V8 Mk1 Consul, Nick Arletts Mk1 Zodiac is on the IoW painted bright yellow, His 40 ford PU went out to America, His 48 coupe changed colour from Grey to Orange when sold and is still about, His Standard was being driven last weekend, and has been put back in the garage for a small bit of work so He can drive the nuts off it, John Holmyards Mk1 Burgandy Zodiac is now silver and still owned my John,

Pretty sure that purple merc surfaced on one of the lowrider forums after ebay a few years back, tho I can remember no more than that. Something tells me it was built from a 4 door.... But I could be telling lies.....

I know what Dez is getting at. We're talking about the cars that represent the outliers of the UK custom scene, not the straight up hot rods, customs and street racers but the unusual stuff that could work in Retro Cars. I bought that first issue (I was 8!) but the real glory days of SM for me were those cars above.
Henry Hirise is a legend, but it's a legendary UK custom scene car, not a retro scene one.
