Today I was replacing the rear pads on my 07 Seat (daily car) but I found that it was very difficult to wind in the pistons, it took a crazy amount of force to get them to start turning. Then I noticed it had started to leak fluid out around the piston.....curse word. I'm going to replace the caliper tomorrow as they are not that expensive but I wondered why it leaked in the first place. How can winding the piston in burst the seal?
Any ideas?

it wouldn't have "burst" but its likely you had forced a corroded piston through the fluid seal causing a tear.

Were you twisting them or just pushing them straight back in?

on some systems you have to undo the bleed nipple as well.

Were you twisting them or just pushing them straight back in? I was using one of those "wind in" tools. After doing some serious interneting it turns out that my particular model is prone to sticky pistons due to water ingress, it's likely that I simply split the seal and that's what allowed it to move. What a pain in the but oh well it's another lesson learned.
