Tax is due at the end of the month, had the car a few months, just realised i did'nt get a new V5 through the post, can i just show the new keeper section (filled out obviously) along with the other docs ?, seem to remember i did this years ago and it was fine, don't know if the law has changed though.

In a word yes and no!!
You can tax it online but the disc will be sent to the previous keeper.
Contact the DVLA and explain they may pull a finger out and send you a V5 before your disc expires.

Sure you have 12 days grace hen the disc expires before you prosecuted.

No problem taxing at a Post Office with just the new keeper section.
However it could be previous owner hasn't sent their section off (2+ months is more than enough) so you should apply for a new V5C in your name. FOC to new keeper who holds the slip.

Is the date filled in on the new keepers section, have had issues before as post office decided they were only valid for a couple of weeks....tippex fixed it. DVLA will send a new log book for free if you have the new keepers section, just be sure to copy it before you send it and the appropriate forms to them.

Cheers for the advice guys, looks like i should be able to tax it with just the slip, once that's done i'll copy the slip, send it off and hopefully get the V5.
I thought the 12 days grace thing was done away with a while ago ?

I think the grace period is for display of valid tax disc and not for being untaxed. It's to cover if you tax on say last or first day of the month and then it takes a week for the Post Office to deliver the actual disc.

You get 14 days grace to display a disc if you apply on line before your old disc runs out. You will need a V62 if the new keeper supplement is over 2 months old (and £25  )DVLAForget the £25, you don't pay if the former keeper hasn't told the DVLA  Section D! |

Tippex or blatantly altered writing on the new keeper's bit means they won't tax it with that. Also if the P.O have previously stamped the new keeper's bit you won't be able to take it using that.

Oh, and you DO still pay the £25 if you haven't got any part of the V5. All that happens when you apply for the log book is that you pay £25 and the previous owner gets a fine from DVLA.

You can tax with the new keeper part but when you do it has to be filled in and they will stamp it so you can't tax it more then once with the slip.

You can tax it at the PO using the new keeper section (section 10) but only up to 2 months after the sale or transfer date written on it.
fill out a V62 and send it with the section 10 to get the new V5c, there is no charge for this but you must enclose the section 10.
The grace period for not displaying is FIVE days and only applies to cars taxed online.

That's why I said 'if you haven't got any part of the V5.'
In the good old days you could (allegedly) write the date carefully so for example a 2 could be changed to an 8 for the month. Nowadays they actually stamp the green slip too so you only get one shot at it.
I expect they (Post Office) will get even harder to deal with anytime soon too, as they're taking on the duties of the local DVLA offices which are closing for good.
