instead of a tax disc what about an mot disc, as i would much prefer to see that a car is actually roadworthy. This also means millions of tax disc holders don't get thrown in the bin. Rubbish idea. An MOT is an inspection of roadworthiness on a particular day. A vehicle with a valid MOT can be totally unroadworthy, and a vehicle without one can be totally roadworthy.

I got pulled up a year ago in the Maestro Van cos the ANPR camera in the police car behind me flagged the van up as not being 'Taxed'. It had continuously been taxed for around 4 months into a 12 month disc. I told PC Plod to walk around and help himself to a gander at the disc in the windscreen. How would that scenario have turned out without the physical evidence in my possession? If they're going to rely purely on a database, it needs to work properly! Keep a receipt of the tax purchase together with your MOT and Insurance Documentation, which are equal forms of proof should the system fail to identify whether a vehicle is MOT'd or insured.

I don't know about you, but I have big reservations about leaving ANY documentation relating to the car in it. A receipt for the VED is fair comment tho.

Just taxed mine, so this disc will sit in the window for evermore!
It'll be like I'm 17 again, driving a 1960's car with an out of date tax disc in the screen!

I wonder if this will become a deadline to get our projects on the road, so our cars will have a paper tax disc before they go digital.

Oh joy. So the motor trader gets shafted once again. I won;t be able to tax a car I've just bought, I'll not be able to prove to a customer that I've jsut put 12 months tax on it for their pleasure. Great idea, not, from a great government, not. I already thought Camerons term was the worst in living memory, on a par with Thatcher selling the country for a fiver, didn't need any more proof, but here it is anyway. Lets all rely solely on a computer system, then when someone pulls the plug out to do the hoovering, nobody will have proof of tax and we can all be fined for every penny we have so they can bail out another bank that will go bust in a year anyway.
Mongs.

I used to like it when I could tax my car quarterly. At the time it was rare to be able to pay insurance by instalments, - it was all up front or nothing, so spreading cost car tax helped. There again I couldn't afford fully comp at £29 and had to have third party fire and theft for £25(a weeks wages was £20 BEFORE tax)

Shame it's not £29 for insurance these days! Was that Old £ or New £ (not being rude, it just seems really cheap!)

On a tangent I will miss having the feeling of 'YES' its legal again when I carefully tear it from its square, and place the disc into the holder

Which is a LOT of places.

Nothing's changed - insurance has always been dear when young - even all those years ago. Paul H Yup. My Dad was paying £75/quarter on a £50 Mk2 Jag during the fuel crisis in the 70s. 1, why the hell not? 2, of course you can, show the receipt, or get them to call the DVLA or do the online check on the DVLA website. 1 because this in line with the timing of closing LVLOs will mean it has to be done entirely online by the time it phases in, and you can't do that with trade insurance (or any insurance that isn;t updated by the provider immediately) 2 no guarantee of a receipt being provided, and phoning, yep, that will work well at half 8 on a saturday night, or in an area with no reception. Which is a LOT of places. You'll still be able to pay at the Post Office, which should work with trade insurance, and you'll get a receipt. You just won't get a disc.

Hmmm.
I can see a few potential issues with this.
Like already mentioned, how would we prove to a buyer if a car is taxed, or SORN'd?
I assume there must be a system for declaring a car SORN and claiming back any tax?
One for petrol stations, when you go and fill up with fuel and go to pay. IF for some reason (forgotten wallet or faulty card) you can't pay, you have to fill out a form to say you will return later in the day to pay! On that form they take down the tax disc number and at the same time use it to check the plates on the car match the disc.
So now it's just become really easy to play the "i've forgotten my wallet" game when filling up with petrol, give false details with your false plates and on ride off into the sunset with a tank full!
With regards the issue of high milers getting better value for money from their tax than us 1/2000 mile a year car drivers. It's the sad case that the price of your disc is seen as your entry fee! "Starting from" if you like, THEN you pay the rest if fuel duty!

Hmmm. I can see a few potential issues with this. Like already mentioned, how would we prove to a buyer if a car is taxed, or SORN'd? Why are folk perplexed by how to tell whether a car is taxed or not without a disc? you just look at the DVLA site FFS. it could not be simpler. Going to look at a car for sale? Look at the DVLA website before you set off. Want to dob in the noisy family up the street for their untaxed car? Look at the DVLA web site. Wondering if a car in your street is abandoned? Look at the DVLA website. SORTED.

The ability to tax for just a month without having to fork out for 6 months and then claim a refund appeals to me so hopefully the DD option will give that.
