This is of some significance too:
I wonder where they're going with that one...

Basically if they scan the renewal form or v5c and computer says no then you cannot tax it.
Obviously if you gave trade ins that covers it without putting the reg on the database then they would need to see docs.

Wow, a common sense win. I've got circa 25-30 cars on sorn so this is definitely a good move, I think I've been fined around £200 over the years...

Normally I get about 15 ish come through in one envelope as there all due round the same time. Then the rest come through every month one by one. The joys of owning loads of cars The sickening factor with a lot of mine is that half of them are mot'd but I can't afford to tax/insure them all at once

we've gone round full circle, I got my Herald in 1997 and its been SORN'D ever since it was introduced in 1998, it hasnt moved since it was parked up in June 1997. years ago before the internet I used to hate having to queue up at the post office at the end of December to SORN it. the irony being that if the car was drivable it would have been tax free (due to age) but I'd risk a fine if it wasn't SORN'd.

Good chance they will indeed if the dvla or their appointed chasers haven't caught up with you yet
(yes they did send me something to my present address even though the car wasn't yet registered there, bastards)

The DVLA have gone to pot. Last year I put a private plate on my car, when I re-moted it, they sent me a letter a couple of weeks later saying there's a discrepancy with the chassis number when MOTed. So I checked the MOT certificate and checked the chassis number. Baffled that they matched up, I suddenly thought I'll check the V5. Low and behold there was a number missing from the chassis number. Wrote back giving them a round of what for, as just the previous month they had returned another V5 to me with a number plate change and spelt my Surname wrong. Reguarding the fact alot of their information is "lawful", I was quite appalled of so many mistakes especially as the only information that they had to change were registration marks

Me too, I'd completely forgotten about the new continuous SORN and received a reminder this morning. Went to SORN it using the number on the reminder and it kept telling me to enter the right number. I then tried it manually with the reg number and ref. number from the V5 and it said my vehicle details weren't recognised.
It was only when I phoned up, frustrated that I couldn't do it online, that the automated message told me about the continuous SORN. I checked in the vehicle details and, as you say Ian, 'SORN in place' was written in the tax status box. Hoorah!

Modern log book stops me scrapping it myself

if you write to dvla telling them you have scrapped the vehicle yourself they should send a letter back confirming its removal from their database

I'm glad I saw this thread. I didn't know about the rule changes, but had noticed that my car is now, "SORN in place". I was wondering what that meant.
