My Mk2 now has a non-functioning wiper (the wiring has broken down, CBA to fix it as wiring gives me headaches) and the amount of muck, grime and rubbish that coats the rear in a matter of days is unreal. I'm so tempted to remove the arm and use a bung instead, then as mentioned previous, use glass cleaner/Rain-X. This was literally 2 days and about 50 miles after a wash. Or if you don't want to remove the wiper motor...

My Escort already has no rear wiper. I find it slightly annoying but then again the rear wiper in my focus goes off as soon as I'm in revers which is more annoying.

I've got a wiper on the back of the Capri because it honestly never crossed my mind to remove it. I obviously have no form of style, just gonna slip into my corduroys and desert boots and get straight back to the 70's where I clearly belong...
Those with two wipers on the back look pretty cool though.

I have never really thought of it before until I had to do it on my Cavalier. For some reason, after I fitted the Calibra Turbo engine whenever I got of the motorway, the wiper arm would be pointing backwards and scratching up the little spoiler.... Ive ended up really liking the new smooth look, but have decided the badges need to go back on.

I'm guilty of using the word "delete"!
Semantics, but I see a subtle difference in the two phrases
"I removed my rear door handles"
"I deleted my rear door handles"
Removed suggests that they have been taken of the car, and presumably the recess, holes and fittings are still present.
Deleted implies that the finish following removal of said item is as though it never existed. In the case of a rubber grommet taking the place of a rear wiper I would use the word removed.
It's a stupid word, I agree... But it kind of works....
Is there anything more sensible as an alternative?

This thread needs a picture. Have one of my old corsa b which I cleaned and smoothed by deleting it(welded up,no fibreglass here.) so shouldn't of sold this loved the unfinished look of this. cleans the rear end by far, didn't really need a rear wiper as the spoiler deflected most of the rain This picture looks very familiar. DA postcode? yes sir it is do you work at pickapart by any chance? if so inbox me haha

My Escort already has no rear wiper. I find it slightly annoying but then again the rear wiper in my focus goes off as soon as I'm in revers which is more annoying. Why is it annoying that manufacturers install handy little things like auto rear wipe when reverse is selected with the front wipers on? I love touches like that. I don't find it irritating that my electric door mirrors auto index in reverse to see the curb when the switch is in the appropriate position. It's just a useful thoughtful touch

On my old Insignia it was a configurable option in the menu system. I could turn the auto swipe on or off. I went for on, its handy!

Definitely cleans up the rear of a low budget modern. NSR lamp unit changed for a Euro spec one, for the same reason.

It isn't about clearing rain but the tendency for many vehicles these days to drag the spray thrown up onto the back window. My daily does it in horrendous fashion. my eco box Arosa daily would be a nightmare without it for this exact reason - having wheels right on the back edge doesnt help, but the addition of mudflaps made an amazing difference

I purchased a pair of 106 donor cars, both come with the rear wiper removed and hole 'grommited'. My daily 106's rear screen gets caked on a small journey in this recent weather, why someone was want to sacrifice rear visibility for looks and weight saving is beyond me!

Because it's what some people like? I'm sure certain people can't understand why I'd decide to make my S-Class 2" off the floor. It's my car, I'll do what I want with it.
I've been on this forum best part of 8 years now and can't understand what's happened of late, there's so many close minded people. No offence to David and Simon etc.

In answer to the rear view mirror question, Pearl Jam wrote a song about one; therefore it is important* . As for the rear wiper question, most cars look better** when decluttered, which can include the rear wiper. My Mk2 VR6 has a naked tailgate itself. However, on a long-distance mile muncher, a rear wiper remains useful; regular long-distance treks in SWMBO's MK4 Golf kick up a thick film on the back window within a short distance and the wiper is really darn useful generally. The whole rear wiper need though is flawed. Ford played with reverse rake rear screen on the Anglia back in the early sixties and it was a winner all-round. Check out the advantages! Why you should buy a Ford Anglia instead of deleting your rear wiper linkyIt even looks like Toyota have toyed with the design idea of this recent carbunkle: Reverse-rake rear screen ftw innit?! * I think so. ** I think so.
