First of all, I hope this is allowed on here, lots of the inspiration for us to do this project has come from this great site, even if its not a retro car it is a retroride!
The vehicle is a 1955 Bedford RL 3 ton 4x4. Originally built for the AFS (Auxiliary Fire Service)in preparation for what we call now "the cold war", and as such it wasn't needed, so was held in government hangers and serviced every year until 1994 where it was sold to private owners.
We saw it on everybody's favourite auction site with only one hour left and no bids, it was advertised as a running and driving vehicle needing restoration, we placed our bid of the starting price and waited!
Ebay picture
We had no undercover storage and started working on it straight away. The cab had been part sandblasted with any holes covered with gaffa tape and then red oxide over the top hence the rather droopy look on the cab panels.

Awesome, these had all gone by the time I joined up, but the old boys always talked about them and their crash gearboxes. It was why I was taught to double de-clutch so, plans?

considering one of the best threads on here is an RL, i don't think you even need to question eligibility!

Thanks for the positive response! Its my brother,Aarons vehicle, he's 22 and was looking for something to take to local steam rallies and car shows and maybe a mild bit of mud plugging. He's also mentioned its to be his wedding car! Owning old big heavy vehicles is a family tradition really, so we're not really newcomers to it all, although this is out first restoration really, This was November 2013, the strip down has begun. Marcus had been roped into helping, hence the leathers! Aaron attacking the chassis with twisted wire wheel on a grinder.

Under the wing be found more crusty metal, the wing supports were rusted paper thin. No repair panels are available so had a go at making my own. Its not perfect, but the support is the right shape, and it wont be seen. I wouldn't of even attepted this without what Ive seen on here!

Great fun, but please tell your mate to wear some goggles when wirebrushing, those go everywhere and hurt pretty good when they hit your thigh, so I imagine it'd be no fun at all taking one to the eye!

Great fun, but please tell your mate to wear some goggles when wirebrushing, those go everywhere and hurt pretty good when they hit your thigh, so I imagine it'd be no fun at all taking one to the eye! Very good point Wheeler, I'll be sure to tell everyone else involved too! We realised very early on that trying to restore any vehicle outside is bloody hard work, so after a few nights ending like this - we found a very local business park and now have a unit to keep her in. Some pictures... The chassis and axles have been wire brushed and painted in zinc primer with a brush, very early on we decided we would 'coach paint' this truck as per original army 'in service' practises. The paint is going to be satin NATO green.

First taste of green! A shakey welding shot, no project thread is complete without blurry post welding pics! White diff is for convoy light.
