After far too long lurking, being generally inspired and genuinely in awe of many of the posts, cars and work written about on here, I'm now 2 days away from collecting this: 01_02_14_8 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr It's a bit of a dream come true, although I've been looking for more than 6 months - I've always loved the P5B Coupe, and decided that now's the time to get one. There are quite a few advertised for not bad money, but lots of them are more filler than metal. I guess low-ish value and age is a bad combination. Anyway, hopefully I've avoided the worst of that (but time will tell, eh?). Plans are to sort out any niggles, tidy-up the interior (mainly cleaning, new carpets and seals), get it well Waxoyled, and then use it as my daily driver. Luckily I don't have to do a daily commute, but I do occasional long-runs for my work, so reliability is important. I've been driving an Alfa 156 V6 for the last few years, so fuel consumption in the 20's is normal now. And before that I used my Alfa Giulia Coupe as my daily driver for 4 years. A baby stopped that, but now he's 6 my son's going to be introduced to the charms of damp carpet and condensation :-) The car's done 500 miles in 4 years, so the 120 mile journey to it's new home on Saturday might be a shock. AA card and flask of coffee will be deployed as needed. I'll let you know how it goes. I want to take some detailed photos as soon as I can, so I'll post those next week - one of the things I love about these is the attention to detail, so there's lots to photo. That's all for now.

Love these ever since l used to see one most mornings when l cycled to college and that was the mid 90's so it was a rare sight then for a commuter, going from an alfa to this will surely be chalk and cheese but the cheese will be a fine vintage to be savours and not rushed, l'm sure you'll even find different route's to work away from the busy motorways

Yeah, bit of a change from an Alfa, but I like the way the P5B Coupe has a slighty sporty-looking edge underneath the leather wood interior - the chopped roof, wheels, V8 engine. Bit of a 'wolf in sheeps clothing', at least until you come to a bend in the road, then its a 'sheep in sheeps clothing' :-).

My dad had one of these when I was 6 years old in 1978, and when I recently had the pleasure of sitting in one at a car show it smelt exactly the same as i remembered they did.
Be careful with the window trims, and the rear glass, as I'm told they are rather expensive things to replace now.

We collected the Rover yesterday - caught the train to Trowbridge then drove the car back, via a stop-off at Stonehenge to see the new Visitor Centre. All went pretty well, although it's quite nerve-racking when you've got your wife and 6 year old in the car with you whilst you struggle to familiarise yourself with complex things like how to switch on the headlights! And at the back of my mind were the words of the previous owner, hoping that I had good breakdown cover, together with the knowledge that he'd only driven the car few miles over the last 4 years, and there was an engine fire 2 years ago due to fuel leakage. I was watching the dials closely. 2014-03-30 14-32-23 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr Amazingly, all went well. As I became more confident in the car it really is a lovely thing to drive. Relaxing but with the V8 burble and no shortage of speed when needed. There are lots of things to sort out, but so far nothing major. I used the car to take my son Swimming and to a birthday party today, and again, all is well. Plan is to use it for numerous short trips to try to shake-out any gremlins, clean it all really well, replace the carpets, seat belts, door seals and windscreen seal and get it Waxoyled. Then we'll see - looks like the door bottoms of at least 2 doors will need doing at some point, and thers a faint but definite thud from the drivetrain then selecting forwards then reverse, but so far so good, and generally happy that there haven't been any major surprises. Here's some photos to document the car as-is. Lovely detailing - the red marker lights-up to show where the corners of the car are at night, but they're invisible from the front: 2014-03-30 14-29-52 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-28-55 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-28-44 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-27-57 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-27-30 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-06-56 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-05-04 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-04-26 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr Lots of 'Made in England' labels - it's lovely to see, but also quite saddening: 2014-03-30 14-26-52 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-26-37 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-26-13 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr You'll see there's plenty of dust. 2014-03-30 13-48-38 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 13-49-51 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr Heater controls work well: 2014-03-30 14-24-52 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr 2014-03-30 14-24-38 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr Wood varnish damage, dirt, under-dash panel hanging off: 2014-03-30 14-23-03 Rover P5B Coupe - First Photos_cb 2 by Rover_P5B_Coupe, on Flickr Can't get much out of this, and one of the knobs is broken. I never realised the level of detail and finish on these. Just something else - wow! A few years back I was in a band and we lingered around a small yard with a few knackered old cars for a photo shoot. We were all drawn to a rusty version of this - even in its decayed state it had an imposing 'look at me' aura about it! Even plonked our young, aesthtically pleasing vocalist on the boot for a decent shot; the car still attracted attention, for sure! Look at it well - it's clearly been a very special car for others previous to you, judging by its condition.

Great photos of a great car. Tell me, were the rear heating and stereo volume controls standard in these or was this a special order for a 'mostly driven' sort of chap?

Great photos of a great car. Tell me, were the rear heating and stereo volume controls standard in these or was this a special order for a 'mostly driven' sort of chap? I think the heater controls were standard, but the volume control was only fitted if a radio was fitted - I've seen some cars with an extra glovebox instead of a radio. The rear heater has 2 pipes running under the car from the engine to a completely separate heater unit. The level of 'over engineering' is quite amazing. Each side of the car has 4 indicator lights - front light, rear light, front repeater, rear repeater. That's just one very visible example - it can't have made much financial sense, but Rover seemed to be doing well until they were sold to Leyland and BLMC was created. As someone said on an older P5B thread here - how did they manage to screw-up things so the company that built all this disappeared so quickly.
