Restoring old paint with cutting compound - bit of help?

Hi folks,

Been reading up on the painting guide on here. I'm not going to respray the car but rather restore whats on it and blow in anything that cant be rescued.

Buying a car soon thats got 70% acceptable factory paint, so i'd like to give that proper deep gloss and redo anything thats beyond help, Using the wet sanding method you'd normally use on a freshly painted car. But i'd like to ask, what grade of wet and dry would you start with?

I'de leave the wet and dry alone and give it a good going over with cutting compound, if you are using it with a machine then go steady and throw plenty of water on the panel and work methodically, you should only need wet and dry if there are imperfections etc in the paint after its first been done - on factory paint you won't need it.

Plenty of water whilst doing it as its very easy to burn through the paint on edges and stuff
And you will need some good cutting paste such as g3 farecla.

Or 3m fastcut.

Ah superb, even better then! I will probably need some for the bad patchy paint repairs but i'll worry about those later.
