I was keeping this thread bookmarked as when I bought my Volvo I thought I would need a better stereo. However I managed to get a CD model which has a tape head unit with a factory fit CD changer in the boot - yo! IIRC it's a clarion too - sounds ok, maybe one of the speakers is a bit dodgy but will look at that in time.
The fascia in the sun visor is absolute genius - "applause"!!

I have this Pioneer unit in my Nova - faceplate is in the sunvisor and the head unit is under the seat - only need to solder 8 wires on some multi core cable... Joff That's the coolest thing I 've seen for quite a while. Suppose you have to pic the right headunit for it to work well though. Deffo got me thinking for the cars I have that don't have anywhere to fit a stereo. It took quite a while of searching the car stereo shops at the time to find the right head unit (about year 1999/2000) - Sony, Kenwood and Alpine were out as they needed too many wires to connect up to make things work - Pioneer came up trumps with only 8 wires needed , which was handy as I could source some 9 core cable. I took what was at the time a £300 brand new head unit and took it apart and bench tested it with the cable soldered in place to make sure it worked (which it did) before I started modding my sun visor. It took a steady hand and a fine soldering iron tip to sort it but it all works! Joff

I have been suggesting this to people for ages for a stealth install, it's only the 2nd one Ive seen in 20 years! (neatest by far as well)

I seem to recall that a few years ago either Kenwood or Alpine made a unit that just consisted of the faceplate with the rest of the system being hidden away.
If you are only short of a little bit of room and don't have the need to play CD's there are quite a lot of media only (Radio/USB/SD) players on the market, usually at much cheaper prices than CD head units. These tend to be a good deal shallower the CD players.

Dealer fit Pioneer KEH 4080 with all the manuals and paperwork in the service history running through the original OEM speakers. Unusual as most E30s had Blaupunkt head units. Works perfectly, replaced all the speakers with reclaimed OEM parts and sounds like an 80s system should, kinda curse word and lo-fi compared to a modern system! I play a gen. 1 iPod touch through a cassette adapter so it's the perfect blend of old and (sort of) new. Also have tons of tapes from back in the day do I'm never short of something to listen to.

A friend of mine is very kindly giving me these: Rokford Fosgate Punch sub in a Classic Acoustics Ltd enclosure and I think a Phoenix Gold qx2100 amp to go with it. Anyone had these before? I seem to remember this being very nice kit.

Can't believe how much love this post has had since i started it... before starting a new one on a similar topic, i thought id try and resurrecting this one again. We also have a 1979 Triumph Spitfire 1500 now that currently has broken Clarion Tape Deck in it I want to replace it with something that importantly: -sounds good -looks right! -FM radio? Any ideas??? Tried a horrible UniPart thing someone gave us and it seemed to burn up. I guess there was something wrong with it, put a Clarion i had in and that just wont play Cassettes. It's got 2 speakers which i'll probably replace (about 6") behind the seats and just has the connections for speakers, ignition live and ground. I thought if push comes to shove i could stick a mini Kicker DXA125.2 2x65 Amp to power the speaker but... part of me wants a cool looking deck in there too! and would like to do it as cheap as i can... i don't get to borrow it much and my dads pretty deaf I know theres some limitations here but i thought i'd throw it out there... if i can get a decent sound that would be cool.

Would there be q market for upgrading old head units with modern tech? Keep the look, functionality of the buttons, but with modern Gubbins? Maybe addition of Bluetooth? Modern sound, good output, hidden SD card? Maybe with a dirty filter to allow some of the imperfections into the signal to make it sound a little warmer and old skool?
Wouldn't be cheap but I daresay I could do it.

That is a million miles from what I had in mind, that's just an old radio with an analogue cable grafted to the input with a switch. What I had in mind was reshelling modern tech, utilising existing buttons and screens etc. That there ^ is a bit gash and a bit naff. But yeah it would be nice to have something retro naff!

I'm not quite sure how it would work with the old push buttons vs the modern interface... would be keen to see it though. maybe it all wouldnt have to work. Agreed on the above British Layland radio... thats what I'm up against if I'm trying to keep it period... fitting anything post early 80s in a Spitfire seems wrong to me.

I'll have a think on how it can be done without just sticking an Aux cable in there.
*anyone got an old naff head unit they don't need?

I was looking for a Becker in the Porsche but they are still pretty expensive and the old Blaupunk's sound pretty bad , someone pointed me to the VDO/Continental branded stereo's , look pretty retro and have BT streaming and hands free , I chose the one pictured , tuner/bt/usb all in at £105 , sounds better than my old Alpine unit , plus with no cd drive the unit isnt deep. VDO are blue and Continental orange..
