Not a lot happening at the moment, but I have got the car back on the ground (well, actually on blocks). I can now level the chassis and try to sort out, as best I can, the curse word body alignment. The wheels are just temporary ones until I finalise width and offset and order the new ones. But first of all, I will have a clean up :-)

Nice, what style of wheel are you going for? I would suggest some slot mags or plain old steelies.

Unfortunately, they don't offer a 15" wheel :-( Update, Just spoken to them. Confirmed that their wheels start at 17" and are around £10,000 a set.

I have had conversations with these guys over the last year or so. I was interested in their wheels because the internal dimension of their 15" wheels is slightly larger than Image's wheels and I have suspension clearance issues. Unfortunately, at the time, they didn't make 10.5" wide wheels. When I talked to them at the 2016 Autosport show I got the same answer. As they specialise in Minis very wide wheels are not often asked for. However,I see that they now make 10" wide rims so they are getting closer :-) I think a phone call is on the cards. Thanks for the memory jogger :-)

They are narrower and have to carry far less weight so are easier to make and use less material. They are also off the shelf (almost) so there is the economy of scale at play. Even so , £10k is rather a lot.

Homemade hot wire cutter works in principle, but I can't get the whole 1250mm wire hot enough, even with 30amps. I am using 26swg wire so I have ordered some 30swg, hopefully that will work. The plan is to cut a foam former for my rear wing which I will cover with carbon.

Have you considered classic domestic fuse wire, I think the 5amp stuff is pretty thin and should be able to get it on the high street still.

Get hold of some stainless wire it will hold the heat better...

Thanks for the suggestions, but I have bought Nichrome Wire Resistance Nickel Chrome Heating Element, the stuff recommended for the job.

Been doing some sums and I think that I will have trouble keeping the Elan below 700kg, as opposed to below 650Kg that I was hoping :-(
I suppose that I should take some consolation in the fact that it would have weighed over 850kg if I hadn't put it on a serious diet.

A 17,5% weight reduction is quite an achievement on such a light weight car in the first place!

Put that way, it does sound pretty good, but I am still disappointed. I need to look into more radical body lightening I guess :-)

Just read the last few pages and a few things cropped up. First, you say you aren't going to race in a series but drag cages tend to have a bar across the b-post hoop at shoulder height, so worth adding that in now. Second, if you can cross the finish line at over 150mph you need a chute, so again, worth building mounts in now. A junior dragster one will probably be plenty. Wheels-wise, CMS (Custom Metal Spinning) in California do really light spun aluminium drag wheels, as do Bogart. Finally, in the Pure Racing section of www.cal-look.no/lounge there a weight saving thread which is well worth a read. The Lotus looks amazing and I can't believe I missed the updates!

Hi and thanks for the suggestions. This bar is used to attach the safety harnesses to. As there is already a suitable mounting point behind the seat (original body mounting point) this bar isn't required. Chute already bought back from the States :-) Drag wheels are an issue. I am severely restricted on the tyre size I can fit under the arches and around the suspension/brakes. The Minimum wheel diameter is 15" and the tyres need to be road legal. I am not interested in fitting skinny front wheels as they will just look silly on this car, IMO. However, I have been in discussion with Image Wheels and they will be lightening my choice of wheels to take into account the car's weight and intended usage. Looking at the various CMS both in Europe and California, they appear to only have a 4 x 130 PCD option. A very interesting thread, thanks, but nothing new that I haven' tried or done :-) I have been on this weight saving journey for a few years now so reckon that I know all the tricks with regard to Elans, but I would be happy to be proved wrong! The only large item I have yet to tackle is what remains of the original heavy fibreglass body, but that will have to wait (pun intended :-) ) as I want to get the car running this year.
