I know I do it every year - I like making things better - no point just accepting you've got it to an OK state and thinking that's good enough
On behalf of the paddock team gewy and Bill this year – rules are always the same - Just the Hill please
If you want to see the last thread the #RRG15 “hill climb feedback” thread is Here - pretty much every good suggestion was implemented this year so if you think it was good this year - the feedback loop is why.
I can’t find the #RRG14 thread but fundamentally the process is was the same – find out what could be improved – make plans to improve – we can resolve pretty much most things apart from the weather
Looking for feedback from any participants, spectators or any other perspective
We’re not fishing for compliments – This year was better than last year and last year was better than the previous year (apart from the weather which was a bit iffy in 2015!!!) and we've done that with your help and feedback
- I’m just after what we did wrong or what didn't work
- What anyone thinks could be done to improve it
Whilst it's nice to know what worked, if it worked this year we are probably gonna do it again next year
I only want to focus on the Hill Activity – venue, toilets, camping, show field in fact anything not hill related - save that for another thread or better still start one yourself.
I also use this thread as a reference before we start organising the activities next year because frankly I am rubbish at writing stuff down in any detail it swims around my head after the show and then if I don’t write it down I forget it
Again this year was much better than last year so we're happy we had some lessons learned but there were areas that we didn't do so well
So from my mental notes
Start up So right from the get go we changed what we planned to do - I expected some questions on why we didn't run group 1 as MS01 to MS30 and group 2 and MS31 to MS60 but I didn't get any at all - which was handy but just so people understand this was the problem we were trying to resolve
Last year we had two groups less than thirty cars ready and waiting in the paddock and had to feed in the late arrivals via the side road and it all got a little "tetchy"
This also meant we had to multiple briefings - we expect to have a couple but not more than that.....
Filling up the Group one on a first arrived basis meant that if we did have some late arrivals or want to drop in some reserves we could do it by dropping in reserves into group 2 and they wouldn't drop a run.
It actually helped a lot.
Guest car packs Some didn’t get them – we clearly didn’t allow enough time for the postal service
Stickers We got some cars signed on on Sat Night so we could reduce traffic – the instructions from Shelsley are stickers on passenger (left) side of windscreen front – First car parked and signed on was a LHD Trabant – now the owner wasn’t about to sticker right in his line of sight so stuck it on his passenger side (right hand side as you look at the car) Now when people who signed on walked back to his car it had sticker on "Right" so what did they do?
Funny how one thing can cause a domino effect!!!!
Changeover This really didn’t work very well – it was always going to be a bit fluid (it had to be - we'd never really done it before) but what we did was state some times – this was a mistake!!! It was the only time during the day where I felt it was like “trying to herd cats”
Fundamentally the issue was Afternoon session people didn't realise they could sign on at anytime during the morning - If we'd made that clear I think that alone would have resolved most of the issues
So during the lunch time break we had all of the following
A - Drivers with cars not signed on waiting at the assembly point
B - Drivers signing on with their car parked at the assembly point
C - Drivers walking back to their cars from Sign on
D - Drivers already in the Briefing area with their cars in the Queue in the show field
E - Drivers already in the Briefing area with their cars in the paddock
So we went down the lines and got everyone to sign on - then we ran close to the "published" briefing time and people started getting twitchy about that.
Simple fix - Sign on open from 10am - everybody to be signed on in the morning
All cars and drivers into paddock at the same time shortly after - then once parked straight to briefing (no briefing till all cars in paddock)
Fundamentally what we want to make sure is people don't spend hours wasted in Queues (part of the same reason we went for a pre-sell process - we don't end up with 120 or more people spending a large chunk of the show time standing in line esp when that line is in a paddock with moving cars
Lanes.... Finally we did what we should have done last year – so much better for the cars and the air in the paddock
Reasons why it works is people quickly work out what's going on and that's it's fair
I did see a few drivers thinking they should be going back into the same lane every time but they quickly realised that it made no difference overall and I also saw that people realised they could play a new "lane game" to their advantage
Want to get a mobile signal at the top of the hill - go in the left lane and get up the top early
Need a comfort break or get some food/drink go in the right lane and you'll have 20 mins from the session start before you need to fire up and move
Pre-selling.... I'm opening that up for discussion too - I do have some views on it but apart from the one earlier I'm going to keep them to myself as I'd like to hear other viewpoints
Right so they were my "takeaways" from the hill - I'd really like to hear yours
I know not everyone who participated in the RWYB are on the forum so if I get chance I will email the people who signed up for the sessions in advance.
Lastly I thought I'd share this number of applicants applying by day
he big spike at the front is mainly driven by RR Forum Applications
Every subsequent peak is driven by a "Facebook" promotion
And some stats of where the applicants found out about the pre-book process
