No more Elwoody?? Looks like he's deleted his account, shame really as I used to enjoy his posts and threads. Here's a little tribute to him if he has left us.

Yep, I know what you mean, I quite miss his posts too. I think that he felt that the forum isn't what it once was, and that it had stagnated quite a lot, one of his lasts threads was this one... In which he commented how it all had become a bit mundane. Personally I agree that it has become a bit stagnant of late, but thats just my opinion (& ElWoodys) and really its a matter for another time perhaps. He sent me a message just before logging off in which he said that he did not want to be too offensive, but some people are really forcing boredom into the forum, when they think a polished 190e or a 1947 car with a plaid blanket on the bench is awesome, and that if he wanted to look at standard cars then he would go to a museum. He went on to say that he was going to take a break, and maybe becoem a spectator, hopefully at some point he'll be back. The thing is, I think he made quite a lot of posts on all areas of the forum, starting threads about cars, or types of cars he liked etc. But when he's the only one posting on his threads it gets kinda boring, and you wonder why nobody else is adding anything to the thread. So after a while you don't think its worth bothering with, because if your not getting anyone else posting in the thread, then it's probably not of any interest to anyone, so why bother. Personally, and I hope nobody takes this the wrong way I have noticed quite a few people who were a bit prolific on the forum have left the building lately. My feeling is that perhaps they all felt a bit like ElWoody, and are all on a break... Hopefully at some point they'll all make a comeback.

I did read that thread pistonpopper and although I did agree with a lot of what he said, it's still a shame he 'felt the need to leave. I do agree that RR is not the place it once was but times change and people move on I guess, having said that I still think it's better than anything FB or Instagram can offer, it's got a real community feel. Hopefully he's just on a break and he will be back posting bad ass Golfs, Surf wagons and showing us his latest Hot Wheels buys again before we know it.

Disappoint. I thought he'd just changed his username or something, which is why I'd not caught any recent postings. We all need a break now and then, hopefully he'll come back if it's right for him in the future. If not, hopefully he's still having fun out there somewhere.

it's shame that a member feels that he has make a point by deleting his account has I am one the members whom 'Elwoody' accused of being 'boring' in a few of my posts - I feel therefore I owe some form of reply / response to that fact - the posts in question were open ended and to the ultimate extent define 'Awesome' or come to that 'Great' or 'Fantastic' - what looks stunning and appeals to me may very well be utter dross to another forum member - RR is a very broad spectrum and appeals to all types from dreamers to owners, 'make do menders' to 'has to be right or I am not doing it'- Very quick motors to catching the bus is faster motors - £500 budget to £££££k's - therefore you have to allow for that and view the forum with an open mind - to narrow it down to purely your own personal tastes and expect everyone else to fall in line with your view is not particularly being open minded - there are builds / cars on here that really don't float my boat at all - likewise I don't expect everyone to fall in love my stuff either, or my views, comments, working methods etc - that's not to say I would not help anyone out or disregard any member because of there own personal tastes / likes either - or take the hump and delete my account come to that - Chris

I assume the dig at the polished 190e is mercdans ? It seems some of the original people have become quite narrow minded in there views away from the ethos of the place .

It is and the dig at the bench seat with a plaid cover in a 1947 car (when in fact it's a 1952) was a go at one of my posts - thing is Dan's 190E thread has 23,000 + views - my latest Jowett restoration thread has 50,000 + if members / readers did not find any interest in them they would not read them in the first place - times do move on and styles / attitudes change - the challenge of life is to accept it or find an avenue in to which to lay your hat but to expect everyone else to come and join you in the same avenue and applaud your own personal tastes is nothing more than narrow minded.

There are many posts that don't interest me on here but that's not to say I don't appreciate the time and effort the OP has gone through its just not my thing, if you don't like it don't read it you do not have to give the OP a hard time and that's not a dig at anyone one individual, lets all enjoy the massive variation of posts and keep the site active, people come and go on all forums, time and people move on to other things

It seems some of the original people have become quite narrow minded Just a point of order, Elwoody wasn't one of the "original people", but I do know what you are saying (although I disagree with it). Here is my thought, sometimes a break is needed from just about anything. I take a break from the forum occasionally, just to get some space and a bit more motivation to head back in again. February and March are the worst months as an admin and content creator on the forum, every year something blows up. As for the attitude of the forum I have to say there are cars on here that I'm a bit meh about, there are definitely threads in general that I don't understand the popularity of, but that is kind of the point of a big melting pot of people. The trick is to ignore them. The danger is in confirmation bias, like you see something you don't like, for example (let's take this old school) rattle can paint and chopped springs, that sticks in your brain and you browse the forum perhaps another twenty or thirty threads and numerous posts you go through and then it pops up again, this happens a couple of times and you go away thinking well Retro Rides is nothing but rattle can paint and chopped springs. You are very wrong, you just saw it four times out of eighty threads, but that is your bias in action. Elwoody has a great example, there was a shockingly bad rod posted in the Show Me Hot Rods thread, he highlighted it out of a post that had 35 other pictures in it, then a couple of people commented that is wasn't good, but there was a 3D rendering of an idea that was similar that wasn't terrible. That was it. When he wrote his "what the hell happened to the forum" post he cited this as a drop in the quality of the forum, but it was one picture of 35, in one reply of over 30+ replies at that point. It was then pulled out to be commented upon rather than just ignored by the very person that was then complaining about the quality of the forum. So it actually appears in the thread a couple of times, when it should have just been ignored and better stuff posted. Conduct yourself in a positive manner etc. etc. etc. Anyway. Have a shiny Mercedes.

In total agreement, and well said. I like everything from seeing old lorrys totally restored to original to the Volvo powered S2000 track car that's on here, Bōsōzoku to Rat Rod - if I don't like it - I don't click it. For instance - VW's do absolutely nothing for me - so I just don't bother looking at the threads. I certainly don't publicly call out someone who's car isn't to my taste... You'll always get people that don't like what you're doing - but the point is you're doing it for yourself, nobody else. Do what you love and the people that like it will come, sod everyone else.

It's a shame he's deleted his account, he's a decent bloke and good contributor to the forum.
I can't help but think that the idea that the forum is less busy than it used to be is more down to being conditioned by the likes of Facebook and Instagram where there is a constant feed of newness which deliberately keeps you scrolling for as long as possible. Compared to such platforms the content is slower on RR, but I'm not entirely sure how much of it is down to actual fewer contributors than x-years ago, and how much is down to comparison to modern social media platforms.
Anyway that's by the by. I hope ElWoody comes back.

Me and my 14 year old lad pulled that car out of a garden Where it had sat for a few years, it’s been given a new lease of life and a 14 year old boy did a lot of work on it I feel totally justified in sharing on here Are you trying to encourage younger RR members Elwoody?? A shame you deleted yourself from here Good luck in whatever you pursue Have a pic of George’s car and the merc he found for me and helped get back to good health
