I used to have a DeVilbiss FLG-5 in work but after lending it out or something it has magically vanished. I never got a go with it and so I have very little spray-gun experience aside from buying that one for the staff (and they had their own ones as well).
So I'm lining up a couple of sets of wheels and one of my cars that needs the arches blown in, to do myself. Now I have the equipment in terms of compressors and hoses and water-traps - the guys I employed knew what they were doing but they are gone now.
So what am I looking at here? I know it had a 1.4 nozzle or tip or whatever on it - but I've seen there are different sizes for primer and topcoat and now I've got scared. What do I go for? Another one the same? Something different?
Planning on cellulose single-pack (is that right terminology?) - etch, primer, basecoat, lacquer.
Any advice for a clear noobie with no experience other than aerosols?

A 1.2 / 1.4 mm needle & fluid tip HVLP gravity fed gun will do the job - HVLP = High volume Low Pressure - you don't have spend silly money to get something capable but I would avoid the very cheap non branded ranges - I can highly recommend this supplier whom I have used on several occasions www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/DeVilbiss is a very good brand and the FLG5 is still in production - SGD have it on special offer at just under £120 inc vat - if that's a bit pricy the DeVilbiss SLG-610 at £65 is a good entry level choice or the SLG-620 at a smidge over £80 - you can of course spend several hundred ££ on high end professional guns but it sounds like you would not get enough use out something like that to justify the expense Cellulose is single pack but available has both a coloured gloss or a solvent basecoat that you apply a lacquer over - has with any application of automotive paint - preparation is critical - a tin of panel wipe is essential

Another recommendation for SprayGunsDirect here, I bought the SLG-620 as my first gun and it's bang on for the money. However, the Flg5 is one of the best all round guns you can buy and I sort of regret not buying one to have as a spare 👍
It will spray primers, basecoat and lacquers to a fantastic standard and last for years. I borrowed a mates one and highly rated it

Now I'm no spray painter by any stretch, but I painted my car, the only car I've ever painted, with a £20 Silverline gravity gun from Stoolstation. Primer, base coat with pearl, flake & clear, same gun. Now it might be just dumb firstime luck, but I think it came out ok.

I've just bought a new gun. Again spray guns direct.
I went for an A.N.I F160 silver. Got good reviews from the gunman on YouTube, and the rebuild kits are less than a tenner swayed my decision.
Not used it yet, but it has a 1.4 nozzle as I've already got an old gun with a 1.7 for celulose primer filler.
Just over £100 I believe

I was planning to stick to devilbiss and it sounds like the one I had previous was the right tool for the job. I'll get another of those, thanks all for comments and advice.

I have the FLG5 and have used it to good effect But when the chips are down I still like and sometimes even prefer the budjet gun I bought as part of an airline kit with nasty tyre gauge and paraffin gun. The spray gun doesn't have any fan control at all so paint assumes a large oval profile. Apart from adjusting the tip and line pressure there is. No other adjustment. I seem to be able to lay paint with it just as well if not better than the FLG

If it can be fixed with a hammer, then it must be an electrical fault
