As sidekick from my car hobby I also love car stereo receivers from roughly 1980 until 2000. This is for me the period that non oem car stereo was at it's best with improving sound quality and more and more gadgets. It ended (beside some exceptions who solder on until today) with the standard works radio's in odd sizes around 2000. Also because this was the period that I first only could dream from a car and with my first cars only could dream of the top model receivers whit a price tag higher than I paid for my hole car... They had also lovely advertisements. Nowadays you can buy some of them at flea markets etc. for very little money which I love to do. I just store them now but plan to built a demo wall for them so that they can at least show their lights and maybe even sound (as long as FM lives). Show yours or advertisements you like about car stereo from this period. Thanks! Thom

Well, if we're talking period audio adverts ... ... then surely the Alpine/Lambo tie-in is in first place? I had the other poster, with the red Countach but I think there were dozens of variations. I worked for a car audio installers in the 90s and these posters were still plastered all over the place then. As for head units of your own, I posted a pic in another thread a while ago but my favourite was probably this, my Alpine 3DE-7887 (not mine in the photo but mine is identical). A real oddity with a 3 disc cartridge. Caught a few people out who didn't know it ejected the cart to change discs. Came with the optional (and largely useless) remote too, as well as a few spare carts. It's in a box under the stairs, maybe I'll find a use for it, one day ...

Ahh not bad, it was Motorola. Turns out two guys were entertaining two ladies in an open top car back in the 20s and one of them said it would be nice to have some music. They got another guy on board and eventually Motorola was born although the radios cost as much as the car. One of the guys went on to start Lear jets 😊

I don't have radios from this period but have plenty of VW radios from the 50s/60s/70s period. I loved the designs back then. This sort of things gets my juices flowing:

This is my old setup, the headunit has now been replaced for a bluetooth variant that is similar in look, but at least 5 years younger The top 1 DIN unit is a CD headunit, the lower 1DIN is the 3+1 MD changer, and an old LED style sunpro gauge unit below that

I've got this in the Golf: It's not wired up, it's just filling the hole in the dash at the moment. I'd have it all working if it wasn't for this Covid-stuff and I could actually get down to where the car is!

It just goes to show a clean, functional design never goes out of style. I doubt the Sony Xplod stuff will age so well ...
