Gents, who has used and rated one of those DIY type (read budget) nail guns? Not the little stapler 20mm pin jobbies but the variety which could be used for 2x2 stud wall work. I will not have access to a compressor so air types are out of the question unfortunately. I aint got the stamina anymore to be hammering all day so thought one of these may help!

The new DeWalt gas less nailers are ok, they are heavy on the battery though. Going on what buying a new one will cost I would buy a well used Hitachi or paslode gas first fix gun - you should be able to pick one up for about £150, strip it and clean it and you will get years of use out of it.
I think fox and possibly Bostitch do clones of Hitachi guns with their own branding

You probably want to be looking at a paslode, the gas ones are the one for a more DIY use stay clear of paslode gas nail guns, our lads at work have loads of issues with them especially in winter. leaking gas and jamming up. The battery powered suff has come on leaps and bounds with our guys using the makita dewalt and even one has a Hikoki (used to be hitachi) |

With paslodes is worth using the winter gas when the temperature drops. Nobody ever bothers servicing them (me included) until they break but it is worth doing as they work so much better. The service interval is quite often on them but it's basically just strip and clean with carb or brake cleaner.
Don't be tempted to buy a cartridge Hilti either unless you need to nail into RSJs or concrete, they are useful tools if you need to do either of those things but slow to reload.

I'm a Carpenter during the day.
Paslode and the like need regular servicing, have misfires and are temperamental in cold weather. Dewalt are trouble free, the only thing that can go wrong is the drive belt can snap but mine has been in daily use for 4 years without issue.

Well its only proper to give some feedback so in the end I decided to hire one from our local establishment. They only had the Paslode to hire out so took temporary possession of a brand new unit and ordered the Rawlplug branded nails rather than Paslode as they were so much cheaper and had good reviews. All I can say is how much having this, speeded up the work and made the job that much easier.Well worth it!
