I know there are some very knowledgeable ladies and gents on here, particularly when it comes to DVLA issues so I'm after some guidance / advice. I have been offered a 2008 Ford Connect Tourneo. It's the high roof version, 1.8 diesel, in very good condition and with only 40k miles. And it's cheap. But, it's a Ford Tourneo Connect converted from new to carry a wheelchair passenger in the rear. It has a motorised ramp at the rear and even still has an electric wheelchair in the back. The last owner died and the vehicle is being sold by the executors of the estate who just want rid of it. They have one key but can't locate the log Book (v5) or any service history. My first thought was grab it and do a DIY Micro Camper Conversion on it. Then I'd use it mostly as a 'day van' and could lend it to family / friends for occasional camping trips. This is the van....... and the plan is to turn it into something like this........... I'm fairly happy with fabricating a basic day van / occasional camper interior - I did one once before on a VW T4 Van I used to own. But, there may be some issues which make this whole plan a non-starter. 1) The vehicle is registered as (Make): Gowrings (Model): Motability. My Insurance Co don't recognise it and I can see that trying to get DVLA to re-register it as (Make): Ford (Model) Tourneo Connect LX will be an absolute nightmare, especially as it is almost impossible to speak to anyone at DVLA these days. 2) The Tax class is wrong and the Post Office can't change it without a V5. Obviously I can apply for one from DVLA for a £25 fee, but it will still need to be changed. It it worth the aggro, or should I pass on it or just try and sell it on as it is to another disabled user? ___________________________________________________________________________ Sorry it's not a particularly Retro based request for advice, but here's a picture of something more appropriate as compensation.

Do they actually own it to dispose of it or is it a specially adapted vehicle that's part of the mobility scheme? I know a disabled person who this world be ideal for if you decide not to go ahead could you message me after griz.

He bought it outright from Gowrings, the company who converted it brand new. I'll post on here if we decide to sell the vehicle as it is (not quite as it is - it needs and new battery and a set of tyres and an MOT).

If it's cheap then it's a silly question lol. Maybe fire Gowrings an email with the reg, if it's custom built they will have a record of it & maybe able to help you with how to register it correctly

Hi, If Gowrings modified it as a brand new vehicle then it would (or should) be a type approved vehicle modification. So be careful about changing the shell back for conventional use. That way lies BIVA.

It does have a Gowrings plate with a serial number and reference number rivited to the body, adjacent to the standard Ford VIN Plate. Sounds like it might be best to leave well alone!

It does have a Gowrings plate with a serial number and reference number rivited to the body, adjacent to the standard Ford VIN Plate. Sounds like it might be best to leave well alone! Being a 2008 it won't be type approved in the modern sense. At best it'll have had an IVA or minister's approval certificate (MAC). If you can get a picture of the plate it might help us work out how it's registered. These days wheelchair access vehicles are registered as the original (unconverted) vehicle - this is because if a car is involved in an accident, people will be more likely to identify it as (for example) a Peugeot Rifter than an Allied Horizon. How easy it'll be to change how this one is registered I don't know, but it might be possible if you can speak to the right person at DVLA. Other than the registration issues, look out for rust - these conversions are often done in low volumes and the build quality (as a general comment not specific to any manufacturer) can be variable. Just remember they take out a load of metal, and put a load back in, and it's typically done by hand - so check that it was adequately undersealed around the lowered floorpan. Hi, If Gowrings modified it as a brand new vehicle then it would (or should) be a type approved vehicle modification. So be careful about changing the shell back for conventional use. That way lies BIVA. Colin If it is type approved, the 8 point rule would apply from the approved build spec. Therefore converting it to a camper wouldn't be an issue so long as it retained the unmodified (from WAV spec) bodyshell and 3 more points worth of bits.

campers are everywhere, vehicles for disabled people are somewhat scarce and expensive and I'm sure most people who need those cars are not going to have a lot of money to spare.
I would leave as is, someone out there will actually need that thing, the world doesn't need more camper vans and a low priced disability car would probably be really doing someone a big favour.
sorry to be super sensible but I would fix it up, sell at a bit more for your time and at a good price for a buyer and spread some karma

Re registering a disability car to standard had been done countless times, DVLA will get there in the end but granted a PITA atm.
It must have been insured somewhere up to now, just because it doesn't appear on the drop down list, there should be a way - Phone a broker and ask?
As for your future modifications, no worse than any other camper/dayvan conversions surely? Little change to the shell and standard mechanical bits......

Actually, because the vast majority of new wheelchair accessible vehicles are sold through the motability scheme, there is a glut of 5 year old wheelchair accessible vehicles on the market. (Motability customers for wheelchair accessible vehicles get a 5-year lease, or 3 years for 'normal' (non-WAV) cars) The prices of converted vehicles secondhand doesn't seem to be any higher than normal (unconverted) vehicles - just been looking at prices of 2014-15 Peugeot Partners on eBay

MoT and a full valet this week and apply to DVLA for a V5 as the old one can't be found, then it will be up for sale. Won't be silly money and most importantly it spreads that Karma stuff at a time when we all need it. Not the sort of car to advertise on here but if anyone is interested then drop me a PM and I'll let you have more info

Sold to a nice family who needed a Wheelchair Vehicle Good stuff. Five years ago now I inherited my uncle’s mobility adapted Skoda Roomster. Not as comprehensively chopped about as your one, but equipped for one-handed driving and with a hoist to load a mobility scooter in the back. I sold the whole package, including the mini scooter, to a lovely lady recuperating from a stroke, for a little more than book price for the base car, and a lot less than it would have cost to start again from scratch. Quite possibly my least profitable, but most satisfying, car sale ever. I even drove it to Wales from Kent for her and came home on the train.

I also sold the electric wheelchair which came with it. The guy asked how much it would cost and I said £10. The scrap man would have given me more as it was really heavy and had huge batteries in it but I figured he needed it and I didn't, and as my old mate grizz often points out on here: Karma rewards us in unexpected ways sometimes.
