Yeah you read that correctly...
This is a build thread to record the progress of this project and add support material to my YouTube link (I can hear the "not another f***ing 'YouTuber." cries already .
To cut a long story short, take a common 4x4 which happens to have the same wheelbase, cut it up, make it 2WD and stick a fibreglass body on so it looks like a '32 Ford Tudor Sedan Delivery, goes like stink, costs naff all to run and annoys the snobby old farts who say a hot rod has to have a V8 and be all an steel body. So this all came about because we have a Sorento we use for towing and general hauling jobs, tip runs etc. Dan had mentioned a Hot Rod project and by chance I just decided to measure the Sorento wheelbase because they're cheap and we have one already so know what they can be like. Would you believe it there is only an inch difference! Another thing is the 5 stud PCD is 5x5.5 which is the same as some Yank stuff so getting nice wheels would be easy as bolting them on.
Dan bought this 2005 XS example for I think about £1500, decent service history etc. but the body was rotten as anything. The benefit of the XS is they came with a factory rear LSD so seemed an even better choice as donor car.
These pics were taken about a year ago, if not longer, the project has been sat for a little while but I'll be updating this thread regularly until it's up to date.

I hate Kias, love Fords and Hot Rods in general, this sounds like the worst idea ever!
Looking forward to seeing something that turns my world upside down. This is why retrorides is so good, brings the most random of projects into my sheltered life.

Interesting idea, though the position of the motor is what usually sabotages things like this, as they're too far forwards to look correct or fit under the bonnet.

I'm really pleased this has gone down so well!
Plan is to BIVA it and get it on a Q plate for those interested, I've never done one before but have a few guides and most of it is common sense.
Like I said, already having one meant a lot of poking about and learning could be done before buying anything. Hopefully my updates (this is further along than this thread and the videos.) will answer a majority of questions. Obviously this will upset a few but the main aim is build something and have as much fun as possible. Granted a lot of problems are going to be self inflicted but that's just part of it.
After the Kia was stripped of most of the bolt on stuff, which weighed a f**k tonne! I never realised how heavy a door could be!! We wanted to know what we could get a away with unplugging from the wiring, fortunately this isn't a Can-bus system so we just kept unplugging things until it wouldn't start. We'll need to whittle this down ALOT but without a wiring diagram that's going to take a long time.
Next job was to see how the transfer box was setup, easiest way to do that was take the front prop shaft out and see if it still moved or if there was a centre diff that would just spin the front flange. Prop dropped and finding the thing still moved was good, test driving it on wet grass and doing donuts even better! Obviously filmed it here's a link to just a short clip: link After that messing about we pressed on getting the body and chassis ready to part ways. Easy enough to do, label the wiring, undo all the body mount nuts and start lifting. Rolled the chassis out from underneath like an elaborate version of the age old table cloth trick. Dan set about plasma cutting the old body up so we could get it scrapped (kept the chassis number though).
Old body off the Kia Skateboard was pushed back in and the '32 body dropped on. Side note the body shell was supplied by Mark at Pro-Laminates, super helpful chap and will definitely recommend! Pro-Laminates Website Body roughly dropped on you can see the engine is slightly too far forward and with this we're almost having to work from the back wheels forward to make everything fit and look correct. The engine's are a 4 pot 2.5(ish) Turbo Diesel lump making an apparent 150bhp, plenty enough to make this go well especially considering we reckon this will weigh nearly half what it did. The engine needed to come out anyway to make super easy access to remove the now redundant front driveline and so we could cut the engine mounts one the chassis off to start working out where to relocate it.
That's a whole post on it's own so I'll save that for tomorrow...

Is there any reason why you couldn't/wouldn't keep it as 4WD? It would add an interesting dynamic to it and as it already has the components would surely be easier than removing it?
