Dear RR hive mind. I have recently purchased a Liner Rough Rider dumper. It has a number plate, but the previous owner never had a V5 for it. It is showing as not taxed or tested on the DVLA website, so does that mean it's 'on the system' and ought be fairly straightforward? The V62 looks pretty simple, should I include a covering letter? And take photos of the chassis plate, number plate (if I can get both in one picture all the better) and a selection of anything else to aid identification. I don't really need to go on the road, but it means I can (legally) nip across a road which would avoid a steep boggy patch of the property. Also, thump along the lane to the pub on it... A picture of the beast Doovla says; Also, would it need MOTing? I guess if I can get a V5, I will insure it and just try to tax it and see what happens. Or wait till Dec when it turns 40? Any advice appreciated. I'm hoping it will be delivered today, but am away 'till Saturday, and can't wait to play on it.

I'd just fill in the V62 and send it
Don't want to confuse them or give them anything to say no

It becomes MOT exempt 1 Dec '24 and zero rated (tax exempt) April '25.
As said, don't give them any more information than they ask for, it confuses them and adds delay.

Just fill in the basic lost logbook form and send the £25. Do not at this point send anything else or they will get confused.
It's going to be registered agricultural or as a works truck so free road tax and MOT exempt anyway.

I have no useful advice, just want to say that thing is cool as a polar bear's ball bag and I'd love to have one (the dumper, not the polar bear).

I have no useful advice, just want to say that thing is cool as a polar bear's ball bag and I'd love to have one (the dumper, not the polar bear). I'm dead excited, I bought it as I need to put some land drains in, and have loads of gravel to move. And I really wanted one!

The salvage yard we used to get a lot of stuff from had one for dragging wrecks about. I'm assuming as you're is a relatively modern one it will have a starter motor rather than a handle? If it's got a handle make sure you know how the decompressor works etc

dodgerover Looks like a starting handle on the back of it in the first picture above your post and the engine picture shows the valve lifter lever. Engine looks its a two cylinder Lister, if it is they can be a a curse word to start, one of the rigs I worked on had a emergency compressor driven by one, it had me on my knees a couple of times before I learned the technique 🤣

Thanks chaps, I went down today to mess about with it. Yeah it's a single cylinder Lister, no electric start, I think I am beginning to get the 'knack' of starting it, the decompression lever needs 'feeling' in, all good fun. It started on my 3rd attempt, I was quite surprised, I was more worried about it breaking my thumb/arm than not starting, but actually it isn't so hard.

Once you get the knack of it try starting it when you've got a few in. That'll be the real test.

I have had a letter from the Doovla, from the "Vehicle Casework Unit". They would like photos of the chassis number and number plate... When I filled the V62 I used the top number from this plate on the back of the truck... But have since found this rivited to the chassis... I think this might be the right one? They haven't returned my cheque, so that is promising. Y'all think I should include both?

Do a HPI check to see which number the DVLA have recorded on their system, make sure to find that one on the dumper, sending multiple photos will just confuse them, it's entirely possible it has had the wrong number (for example a body number) recorded as the chassis number....
Those top 2 on the alloy plate might be patent numbers.
TLDR find out what they expect it to be, sending the wrong one will cause confusion.

I was hoping to tell them what they wanted to hear, but they want photos of the vin plates (but not the one in the windscreen!!) There are no other tags on it I can find... Thank you for your help... I'm still optimistic

Its from a HPI look up of sorts
Theres obviously a transcription error with them recording the U as a Y.
I'm not sure exactly why they have recorded data from 2 different plates though as it makes no sense, however sending photos of both the plates along with a covering letter pointing out they have recorded a letter incorrectly should suffice.
If you send me a message once you have the number written down and I'll clear it off the thread so it's not out there in the clear in case anybody searches it.
