I know this is going in the whinge bin, but really, why on earth did I let her get rid of that old Mazda? It cost us like 42p in repairs the whole time we had it and was cheaper to run, insure and tax!

Indeed.

FWIW warrenty on part will not usually include labour to fit it... 8 hours to change on a PT Cruiser...

However on this occasion the knocking, banging and shaking of steering was caused by three wheelnuts having come loose like finger tight on one front wheel...

all nuts now tightene and checked OK.

phew indeed AK! loose wheelnuts are iffy tho.. I'm never sure if I should be relieved that it was "only" that, or worried about what could have happened if the wheel came off

Here is my week so far (starting on saturday) to make you feel better (and to prevent me starting a wingy thread.. )

Sat AM : Daughter's polo refuses to start. This is something of a big deal, as she's due to drive 200 odd miles back to uni Plugs look manky, so I changed them. It started yay...
Sat PM Went to work. Put recovery truck outside complete with autofive's new dead scimitar on the back. Polo on ramp, check everything.... seems ok, off it goes again.
Sat eve... Truck wont start. A5 and myself sodding around in the dark trying to sort it, no luck. What do we have that will drag a truck with a car on it into the yard? An audi 100, thats what. lock gates go home.
later sat eve... phone call. polo has stopped. Get van, go recover.of course don't remember that the tow-rope is between the audi and the truck, and detour to get it or anything Eventually, both car and van outside house. Van is developing a nasty noise somewhere along the drivetrain too.
Sun AM: Polo wont start. Eventually, I stop checking the ignition side and notice it isn't getting any fuel. Fixed trhe dodgy wire on the fuel pump. Polo now sorted. Truck still won't start tho. and the truck and audi are blocking the door of the garage, so I can't get the van in or the cortina out. AAgh! Put truck battery on charge, try again tomorrow.
Monday... No luck with truck van noise gets so bad I jack it up and check it in the street. lots of lash in the prop. great. Spend 4 hours digging a chevette axle out from behind the garage, then discover it's a saloon one Bah. go home in van then (slowly)
Mon eve. Phone call from safely arrived uni student. So thats one thing done then
Today... I know why the truck wont start. Its cos the diesel tank (and now the filter, lines, pump and injectors) contains rather a lot of water So, I've drained everything except the tank and stripped it all back ready for run from a can with a new filter and a freshly charged battery tomorrow. I can't get at the tank, there's a scimitar on top of it. Also, in a pointless aside, I tried to borrow the battery off the audi for the truck, but lets just say its in a really interesting place on a TD 100.

So I'm still in the van. If the axle (I suspect its the torque tube splines...) gives up, I'm out of cars, everything is either broken, or stranded behind something broken.

Sadly I have only myself to blame for this one. I'm going to attempt to blame the crappy onboard toolkit wheel brace for this in an attempt to mitigate what appears to be rank incompetance on my part here. Been round the car with a proper brace and all seems good now.
